What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavior Specialist position at Central Institute for the Deaf?
The behavior specialist works directly with children and plays a vital role in supporting student behaviors to facilitate learning. The behavior specialist provides both push-in and pull-out behavioral support in order to meet the individual needs of each child. The behavior specialist also performs a variety of activities to support teachers and staff in implementing instructional programs. The position begins immediately and follows the school calendar, which runs through May 29, 2026. The behavior specialist will also have the opportunity to work in our extended school year program, which runs from June 1 - 26, 2026. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Supports students ages 3-12 during classroom activities and transitionsImplements behavior intervention to support students’ participation in classroom activitiesProvides consult support to educational staff to enable successful, consistent implementation of behavior strategiesDocuments behavioral observations and shares findings with other team membersAssists in data collection and analysis to evaluate the impact of interventions on student behaviorEstablishes supportive relationships with studentsMaintains strict confidentiality of information regarding studentsAlerts the teacher or coordinator to any problems with individual students or abuse of students by anyoneParticipates in student IEPs, as neededPerforms such other related duties as may be assigned REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:B.A. or B.S. in Psychology, Education, Applied Behavior Analysis or related fieldExperience working with children in a school or clinical settingRegistered Behavior Technician (RBT) credentialing preferred but not requiredGenuine interest in serving the needs of students and the ability to operate within the philosophy of the programStrong understanding of behavior analysis principles and strategiesExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong interpersonal and conflict resolution skillsAbility to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environmentProficiency in data collection ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:Implements direct behavior intervention strategies with children ages 3-12Conducts ongoing data collection and collaborates with team members to adjust behavior intervention strategiesConsults with teachers, teacher aides, and graduate student recreational aides to facilitate the successful implementation of behavior strategiesTailors intervention strategies to meet individual needs of each childMaintains effective communication with colleagues and caregiversWorks both collaboratively and independently to best support student needsStays informed about current research and best practices in behavioral intervention PROFESSIONAL TRAITS:CollaborativeDemonstrates patience with studentsHas a positive attitudeDemonstrates integrity, confidentiality, and strong ethical behaviorTakes initiativeDemonstrates professionalism and respect for othersDemonstrates flexibilityDresses appropriately; positive role model for students WORKING CONDITIONS:Usually works in a classroom setting but may work outdoors at recess and field tripsWork can be physically demanding; may spend much time standing, walking, stooping, crouching, kneeling, lifting/moving up to 25lbs. or sitting on floor as age of students dictateMay require extended work hours to respond to school needs CID is an equal opportunity employer.
