The Role
We are seeking a Controller to lead our financial strategy and operations. This role is both strategic and hands-on, responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organization while supporting project performance and long-term growth.
You will work closely with firm leadership and project managers, providing insight into financial performance, strengthening processes, and helping guide key business decisions in a project-based consulting environment.
Key Responsibilities
· Oversee and perform all accounting operations, including general ledger, close process, budgeting, and financial reporting.
· Lead, direct and oversee accounting help.
· Provide strategic financial insights to support decision-making and business growth.
· Manage cash flow, working capital, and overall financial stability of the firm.
· Monitor project financial performance, including job costing, utilization, margins, and billing efficiency.
· Own project accounting framework, including job costing, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition.
· Partner with operations and leadership on planning, resource allocation, and strategic initiatives.
· Maintain and enhance internal controls and ensure compliance with FAR, GAAP and applicable regulations.
· Coordinate with external CPAs, auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners and oversee tax filings, audits, and regulatory reporting.
· Oversee payroll and labor cost allocations.
· Support contract review and negotiations, including financial risk assessment and billing structures.
· Develop KPIs and dashboards to track company and project performance.
· Support pricing strategies and proposal development to ensure profitability.
· Evaluate and improve financial systems, tools, and processes as the firm grows.
Key Skills & Strengths
· Strong foundation in accounting principles, financial management, and financial reporting.
· Experience with project-based accounting, job costing, and revenue recognition, preferably in AEC, engineering, or environmental consulting.
· Proven ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a small business setting.
· High attention to detail and strong analytical skills in a dynamic environment.
· Effective communicator who can partner across all levels of the organization and build relationships.
· Proactive, resourceful, and solutions-oriented.
· Commitment to continuous improvement and process efficiency.
· High integrity and sound professional judgment.
· Advanced Excel skills.
· Experience in Deltek Vantagepoint preferred but not required.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
· 7-10 years of progressive experience in finance or accounting.
· Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
