Under the direct supervision of the Healthy Living Director, the Fitness Instructor plans and leads safe, engaging, and inclusive fitness classes for individuals of varying ages and fitness levels. Classes may include strength training, cardio, functional movement, flexibility, yoga, Pilates, and other approved formats. The Fitness Instructor creates a welcoming and motivating environment that supports member health and wellness goals while carrying out responsibilities in alignment with the mission, values, policies, and procedures of the Central Coast YMCA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, prepare, and lead assigned fitness classes in accordance with approved YMCA program standards and class formats.

Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, and appropriate exercise modifications for varying abilities and fitness levels.

Monitor participants and promote proper technique, safe movement, and appropriate use of equipment.

Create a welcoming, respectful, motivating, and inclusive environment.

Set up, inspect, and properly store equipment and promptly report damaged or unsafe equipment.

Record attendance and maintain required program records accurately and timely.

Enforce facility and program rules and establish appropriate physical and behavioral boundaries.

Respond appropriately to accidents, injuries, and emergencies and complete required reports promptly.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program area.

Notify the Healthy Living Director as soon as possible when unable to teach a scheduled class and follow branch procedures for substitute instructors. All substitutes must be approved by the Healthy Living Director.

Maintain required certifications and complete required training within established timeframes.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.

Report to scheduled shifts on time and perform assigned duties for the duration of the shift.

Follow all Central Coast YMCA policies, procedures, safety practices, and branch protocols.

Treat members, participants, guests, volunteers, and coworkers with dignity, respect, and a helpful attitude.

Maintain professional and effective communication and working relationships.

Immediately report unusual circumstances, safety concerns, policy violations, or matters requiring supervisory attention.

Conduct oneself consistently with the YMCA mission and core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Comply with the Central Coast YMCA Appearance and Grooming policy.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Must be 18 years of age or older.

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.

Experience participating in and leading group exercise or fitness activities preferred.

Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate group instruction.

Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to follow direction, demonstrate initiative, and work independently as appropriate.

Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

Dependable, professional, and able to adjust to changing priorities.

Ability to relate effectively to adults, youth, and individuals of varying backgrounds and abilities.

Understanding of and commitment to the YMCA mission and core values.

CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

Current CPR and First Aid certification required. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Complete all Central Coast YMCA required training within established timeframes.

Complete Child Abuse Prevention training annually and sign acknowledgment of having read and understood the Child Abuse Prevention Handbook.

Complete YMCA fitness instruction or other job specific training as required by the Healthy Living Director.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
