STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Sports Camp Team Leader, the Sports Camp Counselor is responsible for assisting in and leading a variety of activities that are structured to provide children who are blind or visually impaired with quality recreational experiences.

Must have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical endurance to engage in recreational activities requiring prolonged standing, bending, stooping, eye-hand coordination, & manual dexterity to manipulate equipment. Familiarity with the athletics that are covered during the program.
High energy. Ability to serve as a positive role model.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Enjoy being in the company of children. You will need to be available to stay for the duration of the program, as this is an overnight experience. Food will be provided. Daily exposure to sun, heat, and cool night temperatures.
EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
Previous work with summer camp and / or program with children with or without disabilities a preferred. College students or college graduates preferred. First Aid, CPR, and lifeguard certification preferred.
Required to pass a background check.

- Welcome team members and families. Assist with providing group oversight and ensure all team members stay together as a group.
- Assist with leading and implementing camp programs for children. Support rehab staff and other program presenters as they engage campers in activities. Monitor safety, including application of sunscreen, bug spray, etc.
- Serve as a role model and sighted guide. Engage in constructive group communication and always display positivity. Mentor, coach, and support campers. Actively build team comradery and a team identity. Promote a respectful and inclusive community. Maintain an ongoing active presence with the group.
- Assist the Team Lead with tracking camper dietary restrictions and ensure meal accommodation is made.
- Know, reinforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the program, including providing supervision to campers to ensure their safety and always know the whereabouts of team campers. Ensure campers travel to areas in groups. Understand all emergency response procedures. Under the direction of the lifeguard(s), ensure all water rules are followed.
- Observe the development growth, general well-being, and skill achievement of the team’s campers. Ensure all campers have the support they need, are engaged in activities, and participate as active members of their team.
- Assist the Team Leader with moderating camper disputes, providing emotional support and conflict resolution. Handle any behavior issues that may arise and escalate up to the Team Leader as needed.
- Share previous knowledge and experience with fellow team members. Strengthening team comradery, positively affecting ease of movement, incorporate approaches which in the past were effective.
- Assist the Team Leader with maintaining and ensuring the camp schedule is followed and the team is on time for events. Meet with Manager of ASR and rehab staff members daily to ensure camp objectives and goals are attained. Cooperate with the entire camp staff in working together for the welfare of the campers.
- Assist in keeping the building clean and ensure all equipment and supplies are in good order. Ensure camper bunk areas are organized, and each camper is aware of their belongings and materials.
- Assist the Team Leader in maintaining accurate program and camper records by providing relevant information for the Team Leader to complete reports as they relate to skill acquisition and camp conduct.
- Completes all other duties assigned.
