STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Manager of Adaptive Sports and Recreation, this position is responsible for leading a variety of activities for their respective group that are structured to provide children who are blind or visually impaired with quality recreational camp experiences.

Must be able to communicate and work with groups of various ages, skills, and ability levels and provide necessary instruction to campers. Above average organization skills. Must be outgoing, able to communicate easily with others, and intuitively assess what needs to be done and complete it. Stay on task at hand. Provide equal attention to all members of their team.
REASONING ABILITY
Must have ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical endurance to engage in recreational activities requiring prolonged standing, bending, stooping, eye-hand coordination, and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment. Familiarity with the athletics that are covered during the program. High energy. Ability to serve as a positive role model.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Enjoy being in the company of children. All team leaders and counselors will need to be available to stay for the duration of the program, as this is an overnight experience. Food will be provided. Daily exposure to sun, heat, and cool night temperatures.
EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
Previous work with summer camp and / or interaction with children with or without disabilities required. College students or college graduates with leadership experience required. Prior experience in team sports preferred. First Aid, CPR, and lifeguard certification preferred.
Required to pass a background check.

- Responsible for the safety and cohesiveness of all counselors and campers to ensure smooth integration into a team unit. Maintain a vocal presence and a positive approach to all activities, challenges, and daily plans for the week.
- Show initiative when welcoming team members and families and convey their leadership role of their team. Along with the assigned counselors, introduce themselves to parents/caregivers and campers. Provide group oversight and ensure all team members stay together as a group.
- Implement camp programs for children as leaders of the team. Support ASR Manager, rehab staff, and other program presenters as they engage campers in activities. Ensure campers are listening and positively engaged. Ensure all members of the team understand the assignment and that the goals of the activity are achieved. Monitor safety, including application of sunscreen, bug spray, etc. If a counselor is experiencing any challenges with their camper, intervene and support as needed.
- Serve as a role model and sighted guide, facilitate constructive group communication and display positivity. Mentor, coach, and support counselors as they engage with campers. Actively build team comradery and a team identity. Promote a respectful and Inclusive community. Maintain an ongoing active presence with the group.
- Track both camper and counselor dietary restrictions and ensure meal accommodation is made.
- Know, reinforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp, including providing supervision to campers to ensure their safety and knowing the whereabouts of all team campers and counselors. Ensure campers and counselors travel to areas in groups, no one counselor is to be alone with a camper. Understand all emergency response procedures. Be the point of contact for the nurse in emergency situations. Under the direction of the lifeguard(s) ensure all water rules are followed. Enforce the buddy system.
- Provide supervision and support to the counselors and campers assigned to their team. Observe the growth development and general well-being and skill achievement. Ensure all campers have team support and that they are engaged in all activities as an active member of their team.
- Moderate camper disputes by providing emotional support and conflict resolution. Handle any behavior issues that may arise.
- Ensure counselors are completing their job duties as assigned, that they are attentive to their campers, and positively engage well with other team members by providing counselor relief coverage as needed.
- Maintain and ensure camp schedules are followed and team is on time for events. Meet with the camp director and rehab staff daily to ensure camp objectives and goals are attained.
- Cooperation with the entire camp staff in working together for the welfare of the campers. Respect and support other teams and their leaders.
- Assist in keeping the campsite neat and clean and ensure all equipment and supplies are in good order. Ensure camper bunk areas are organized, and each camper is aware of their belongings and materials.
- Complete camper reports as it relates to skill acquisition and camp conduct. Assist in maintaining accurate program and camper records.
- Completes all other duties assigned.
