CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will be trained in developing reports, presentations, manuscripts, technical education and guidance materials for use during public health and medical activities and emergency responses to natural and man-made disasters. Additional training responsibilities may include performing and assessing the scientific literature, obtaining internal and external subject matter expert input and testing of tools at emergency response exercises.

Learning Objectives: The selected participant will be trained in these opportunities and be able to acquire the following skills:

  • Training on how to perform a systematic review and associated processes for generating evidence based guidelines
  • Training on toxicological principles and medical management after a chemical and radiological/nuclear disaster
  • Training in communication skills by interacting with internal CDC and external academic and public health experts
  • Training on how CDC builds public health capacity for preparing for, responding to, and recovering from natural and human induced disasters and emergencies by participating in trainings and/or exercises
  • Training on presentation and oral communication skills by developing presentations and agendas on their research activities at departmental meetings and at external scientific meetings at least once a year

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 16, 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for eleven months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).
