Research Project: The Epidemiology and Applied Research Branch (EARB) is the principal scientific research branch within CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC). Our mission is to generate and translate high-quality scientific evidence that advances population-based cancer prevention and control. Through research, program evaluation, implementation science, and partnerships with public health and academic organizations, EARB informs policies and practices that advance evidence-based cancer prevention and control, reduce differences in cancer-related health outcomes, and enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors.
You will engage in epidemiologic research addressing topics in cancer prevention and control, with opportunities to focus on gynecologic cancers, HPV-related cancers, or other cancer-related topics that align with your interests and ongoing research priorities within DCPC. Research activities may include analyzing data from national surveys, electronic health records, cancer registries, and administrative claims databases to investigate cancer risk factors, screening practices, follow-up services, survivorship, differences in health outcomes, and the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based cancer prevention and control interventions.
Learning Objectives: You will receive mentorship from CDC scientists and opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across CDC and partner organizations. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain experience in conducting applied epidemiologic research, systematic literature reviews, statistical programming and analysis using software such as SAS, SUDAAN, and R, data interpretation and visualization, scientific writing, and scientific communication. You will also develop skills in translating research into public health practice through collaboration and dissemination of findings via scientific publications, presentations, and other communication products. In addition, you will have opportunities to participate in CDC seminars, workshops, scientific conferences, and other internal and external professional development activities to enhance research skills, broaden scientific knowledge, and support development.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 14, 2026. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
