CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Office of Policy and the Office of Science in the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) in the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.
Research Project: In this educational research participation opportunity with the CDC’s Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP), you will engage in a mentored learning experience focused on applied environmental health science and public health practice. You will gain exposure to cross-cutting environmental health topics such as asthma, lead exposure, and safe water while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and interacting with internal and external partners. Through participation in ongoing projects, meetings, and scientific discussions, you will build knowledge of how environmental health research, communication, and public health activities inform programs and policy. This opportunity is designed to provide training and professional development in environmental health science within a collaborative research environment.
Learning Objectives: Through this mentored training experience, you will have opportunities to:
- Gain experience preparing talking points, presentations, and communication materials for scientific discussions, speaking engagements, and program-related activities.
- Build knowledge of environmental health topics through participation in meetings, collaborative discussions, and engagement with division leadership and partner organizations.
- Develop organizational and communication skills through tracking meeting outcomes, scientific priorities, program updates, and cross-cutting environmental health activities.
- Strengthen collaboration skills through engagement with multidisciplinary teams, partner organizations, and environmental health initiatives.
- Learn how scientific and public health information is communicated to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
- Gain exposure to national, state, and emerging environmental health policy and legislative topics relevant to public health practice and research.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 14, 2026. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
