Rochester Youth Program Coordinator
The Center for Teen Empowerment (TE) employs, trains, and empowers youth to, in collaboration with adults, create peace, equity, and justice through a unique, asset-based youth organizing program in Boston, Somerville, MA, and Rochester, NY. TE employs youth to identify the most pressing issues in their communities and develop a strategy to address those issues involving many of their peers. TE’s work is based on the acclaimed, interactive Teen Empowerment Model, a system that builds the leadership skills of youth and trains them to do the planning and problem-solving necessary to make a meaningful impact on their communities and the issues that affect their lives.
TE Rochester is hiring a Program Coordinator to use his/her/their skills and professional experience in both group and individual settings to help young people realize and actualize their leadership potential. Program Coordinators will work in a team of adult staff in Rochester to provide youth organizers with the training, understanding, and logistical support needed to reach individual growth goals, positive community change, and challenge and work to change oppressive societal values and social structures.
In addition, the coordinator will be responsible for program evaluation and reporting, marketing events and initiatives in the community and on social media, building relationships with external partners, representing the organization at community meetings and events, assisting with fundraising, and other tasks as assigned.
Responsibilities include:
- Implement the TE model, which includes conducting the hiring process to identify teens to work as Youth Organizers and youth artists, facilitating daily 2-3 hour sessions with youth to create community and city-wide social change initiatives.
- Train Youth Organizers to obtain the necessary knowledge and skills to work effectively on various topics and skills (i.e., diversity issues, community building, feedback and communication, facilitation, conflict resolution, event planning, civic engagement, etc.)
- Assist Youth Organizers in planning and implementing small and large-scale community events, projects, and initiatives, including youth peace initiatives, youth-police dialogues, community block parties, civic action campaigns, and more.
- Collaborating with other TE staff on city-wide projects and agency planning
- Collaborating on targeted problem-solving efforts with community partners to address issues of critical importance to youth
- Advocating on behalf of youth to ensure their emotional and physical health and future educational, vocational, and emotional well-being
- Assist youth organizers in the creation of original artistic content
- Administrative duties, i.e., tracking youth hours, editing youth speeches, drafting and responding to emails, scheduling and attending meetings with community stakeholders, event/initiative documentation, booking event space, etc.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Commitment to Teen Empowerment’s mission and values.
- Experience in, or a willingness to learn, group facilitation and meeting design using interactive methods. Familiarity with the Teen Empowerment Model is a plus.
- Sophisticated understanding of positive youth development approaches, community engagement strategies, systemic change, and youth issues.
- Excellent public speaking and written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to build positive, collaborative partnerships with youth and adults. Mediation and conflict resolution skills are a plus.
- Experience working with youth in urban communities. Experience developing and operating youth programs preferred. Program management experience is a plus.
- Must be self-motivated, able to work independently, take initiative, and participate productively in team efforts.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and meet deadlines. Excellent attention to detail.
- Arts, music, theater, poetry, or similar skills or experience are a plus, and the ability to work with youth to develop those skills
- High School Diploma or GED required, as well as an undergraduate degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Familiarity with the neighborhoods of Rochester is strongly preferred.
- Driver’s license preferred
Salary: $35,000-$40,000 (negotiable) commensurate with experience. Full-time 40-hour-a-week salaried position with excellent benefits. Some evenings and weekends are required.
