Environmental Services Technician (EVS)
Key Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
Reporting to the Office Manager, the EVS technician is responsible for performing cleaning and sanitation duties to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Key responsibilities include cleaning patient rooms and common areas, proper waste disposal, disinfecting high-touch surfaces, restocking supplies, and adhering to strict infections control protocols.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cleaning and disinfection: Perform daily cleaning tasks like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting, as well as disinfecting all surfaces according to established procedures.
- Infection control: Implement and follow all infection control and universal precaution guidelines, which are crucial for preventing the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
- Waste management: Safely collect and dispose of general waste and biohazardous materials according to facility standards.
- Supply and inventory: Restock necessary supplies, such as toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies, in patient rooms and public areas.
- Safety and emergency preparedness: Follow all safety guidelines, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and assist with emergency or disaster preparedness activities as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Attention to detail: The ability to follow cleaning protocols meticulously and notice potential hazards or areas needing attention.
- Physical stamina: The physical capability to perform manual tasks, such as lifting and moving equipment or furniture, and stand for extended periods.
- Communication: Good communication skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors, and clinical staff.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with cleaning agents, and infection control principles is required.
- Customer service: A commitment to providing a positive experience for patients and visitors.
GENERAL PROCEDURES:
- Set out Wet Floor signs whenever mopping.
- Utilize proper personal protective equipment such as goggles and rubber gloves when working with cleaning chemicals.
- Notify the Office Manager when an issue arises - i.e., broken equipment, water leaks, lighting, doors, or items that are deemed unusable (placing an out-of- order sign on these items if feasible).
- General IPC (infection prevention and control) protocols must always be utilized.
- Wastewater must be properly disposed of after cleaning and sanitizing has been completed. No used water will be stored for any reason (for example: used mop water).
- All cleaning chemicals are to be approved by the Office Manager prior to use.
Common Area: Five days per week
Nightly
- Vacuum entrance way mats.
- Ensure all exterior doors and stairwell doors are locked at each visit.
- Empty all wastebaskets and trash containers, including exterior trash containers. Replace the liners as necessary.
- Vacuum (HEPA) all carpets and sweep under any machinery that Vacuum (HEPA) will not reach.
- Sweep, dust-mop and wet mop all hard surface floors. Damp-mop to remove spills and water stains treated in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
- Clean outside surfaces of all elevator doors and frames. Damp mop and edge all cab flooring.
- Clean and sanitize toilets, toilet seats, urinals, and sinks.
- Remove fingerprints, dirt smudges, etc. from all doors, frames, mirrors, glass partitions, windows, light switches, brickwork, elevator door jambs, and elevator interiors.
- Restock paper products, soap, sanitizers, feminine hygiene disposal bag inserts as needed.
- Clean, sanitize, and polish drinking fountains.
- Pick up any trash and place it in trash containers.
- Pick up used towels and place them in soiled towel containers (in applicable buildings).
- Remove all trash and recycle paper containers from floors to the designated trash areas. Boxes marked trash are to be thrown away.
- Return chairs and wastebaskets to their proper positions.
- Provide Office Manager with a list of building maintenance needs including, but not limited to, burned-out overhead lighting, leaking faucets, running toilets or urinals, damaged walls, malfunctioning door or cabinet hardware, trip hazards, leaking ceilings or windows, or any other item coming to the attention of EVS staff.
- Dust all furniture and other horizontal surfaces with treated dust cloths. Use sanitizer where applicable, i.e., benches and countertops.
- Sweep stairwells and dust accordingly.
- Where applicable, for elevators, polish rails on elevator walls, clean cab walls and interior doors. Vacuum (HEPA) and scrub elevator thresholds. Using manufacturers' recommended chemicals is especially important in and around elevator cabs.
- Where applicable wipe/clean all elevator cab light diffusers and entire cab ceiling. Wipe down inside and outside of trash cans as needed.
Bi-MonthIy
- Wash shower and restroom walls with approved disinfectant (in applicable offices).
- Dust all high reach areas, including tops of door frames, structural and furniture edges, louvers, tops of partitions, picture frames, all horizontal and vertical blinds and other areas not reached in nightly or weekly services.
- Wash and clean all interior glass partitions and interior office windows.
- Vacuum (HEPA) upholstered furniture and surfaces.
- Vacuum (HEPA) all air conditioning diffusers and returns.
- Sweep/mop mechanical and storage rooms.
- Meet with Office Manager monthly to review and discuss office needs.
- Attends Monthly Office Staff meetings at least 75% of the time on an annual basis.

Qualifications for Success:
Education and Experience Requirements
Education: High School graduate or GED preferred.
Experience: Two (2) years’ cleaning experience in a healthcare facility preferred.
