THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing community safety and racial justice. Since 1996, we’ve worked alongside communities, courts, and those most directly affected by the justice system to build stronger, healthier, and more equitable neighborhoods. With a team of over 900 staff and an annual budget of $130 million, the Center carries out its mission through three core strategies:

  • Operating Programs that pilot new ideas and address local challenges;
  • Conducting original research to evaluate what works—and what doesn’t; and
  • Providing expert assistance and policy guidance to reformers across the country and beyond

Backed by decades of on-the-ground experience and nationally recognized expertise, we bring innovative, practical, and lasting solutions to justice systems nationwide.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Operating within the centralized criminal courthouse, Bronx Community Solutions provides meaningful early diversion, pre-plea and post-conviction sentencing options to participants, in lieu of traditional outcomes. By participating in one of Bronx Community Solutions programs, participants are connected to an array of onsite staff, including social workers, case managers, and group facilitators, with the goal of addressing underlying social service needs and connecting participants to an array of community-based organizations, using the arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of an individual’s life and avoid unnecessary incarceration.

Bronx Community Solutions seeks a Community Improvement Supervisor. Reporting to the Coordinator of Community Improvement, this role involves supervising individuals mandated by the court to perform community service across various locations in and around the Bronx borough. The Community Improvement Supervisor will oversee offenders engaged in community service projects, support the community improvement department, and collaborate with community partners in the Bronx. Additionally, the supervisor will participate in voluntary service initiatives alongside community members, schools, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Independently oversee a team of six to ten participants mandated by Bronx Criminal Court to complete community service;
  • Provide encouragement and guidance to participants to ensure quality work and timely completion of mandated community service hours;
  • Maintain a positive and welcoming work environment for all mandated participants so that they may thrive in giving back to the community, rather than seeing their work as punishment;
  • Monitor participants' adherence to court mandates, including tracking program attendance;
  • Alert the Coordinator promptly to any concerns or emergencies regarding community service;
  • Collaborate with the Community Improvement Team and Bronx Community Solutions staff to ensure the efficient operation of our community service program;
  • Assist the Coordinator of Community Improvement with administrative tasks, including managing community service compliance data, creating monthly schedules, and procuring necessary supplies;
  • Promptly respond to all emails and calls related to community service compliance data;
  • Drive community service van(s) safely following NYC DOT guidelines to designated sites as needed;
  • Safely return van(s) to the parking garage after work-related events or community service;
  • Maintain van(s) cleanliness; report all incidents to coordinator or superiors;
  • Conduct presentations and facilitate meetings with volunteers and stakeholders;
  • Maintain inventory, replenish supplies, and report on participant compliance regularly;
  • Cultivate and sustain partnerships with work sites in the Bronx community, engaging with community programs and volunteers;
  • Collaborate with Bronx volunteers on community projects focusing on beautification, community improvement, and environmental justice;
  • Participate in required meetings (All Staff Meetings, Department Meetings, Supervision, and Stakeholder Meetings) and presentations with community partners and volunteers;
  • Make referrals to the social services department for participants with underlying needs;
  • Fulfill additional duties assigned by the Coordinator of Community Improvement, or superiors; and
  • Perform other duties assigned
