Position Description

This posting will be used to fill Full-time, Permanent, Safety Sensitive, Electrical Technician I or II positions in the Electrical Technician Proficiency advancement series in the Department of Public Works, in Utility Operations. The proficiency advancement series consists of the positions of Electrical Technician I, Electrical Technician II, Electrical Technician III and Senior Electrical Technician. Once hired, employees non-competitively advance through the Electrical Technician series by obtaining additional skills and certifications and receiving skill based pay increases. A pre-hire test is conducted prior to an offer of employment in order to determine the candidate's technical skill level and if they meet the qualifications for the position to be filled.

Examples Of Duties And Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

The Electrical Technician I, Electrical Technician II, Electrical Technician III and Senior Electrical Technician are differentiated on the basis of skills, certification, licensing, and demonstrated ability to perform specified skills as defined in the Personal Qualifications Standards of the Maintenance Career Program Manual, a separate component of the skill-based EXCEL Flexible Worker Program.

Electrical Technician I

This is Electrical Technician work at the entry level in the Bureau of Utilities, Department of Public Works. Work involves the performance of basic level preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on the electrical systems installed in the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and the production, storage and distribution of potable water. Work involves responsibility for performance a variety of basic maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily electrical in nature but may include some minor mechanical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of basic preventative maintenance tasks, inspection of the operating conditions and performance of electrical equipment and systems, installation of basic electrical components and circuits, performance of basic corrective maintenance and assisting others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks on electrical equipment and systems. Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety.

Electrical Technician II

This is Electrical Technician work at the II (intermediate) level in the Bureau of Utilities, Department of Public Works. Work involves the performance of intermediate level preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance activities on the electrical equipment systems installed in the collection and treatment of municipal wastewater and the production, storage and distribution of potable water. Work involves responsibility for performance a variety of intermediate level maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily electrical in nature but may include some instrumentation and mechanical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of intermediate level preventative maintenance tasks, inspection of the operating conditions and performance of electrical equipment and systems, installation of electrical components and circuits, performance of intermediate level troubleshooting and corrective maintenance and assisting others in performing advanced corrective maintenance tasks on electrical equipment and systems. Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety.

Minimum Qualifications

Electrical Technician I Graduation from high school; one (1) or more years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems; qualified to enter or successful completion of an electrical apprenticeship program registered with the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. Electrical Technician II: Graduation from high school; Maintenance Career Path certification as an Electrical Technician I; two (2) or more years experience in the installation and maintenance of industrial electrical equipment and systems; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE: The Electrical Technician II position requires possession of the Maintenance Career Path certification as an Electrical Technician I. This certification can only be obtained as a county employee. Therefore, the certification may be substituted with completion of a 2 year electrical apprenticeship program registered with the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council that includes 288 documented hours of electrical training and 4000 hours of work processes. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.

NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing
