GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Biology Instructor is a full-time, on-site academic position reporting to the Director of Academic Affairs. As the sole faculty member within the biology department, this individual will play a key instructional role and provide subject matter expertise to support the development and continuous improvement of biological science offerings. The position requires strong collaboration with program directors across disciplines to ensure alignment with institutional goals and program needs.
Instructional Responsibilities
- Teach assigned biological science courses in a hybrid format (both online and in-person) at the Brooklyn and Staten Island campuses.
- Deliver engaging, high-quality instruction that supports achievement of course learning objectives.
- Utilize the institution’s Learning Management System (LMS) and other educational technology to manage content, assess learning, and communicate with students. Provide timely, constructive feedback and maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance.
- Apply varied instructional methods to support student success across diverse learning styles.
Curriculum and Course Support
- Assist in maintaining and updating course materials to ensure alignment with programmatic and institutional learning outcomes.
- Recommend textbooks, lab materials, and instructional technologies that enhance course delivery and student learning.
- Collaborate with the Director of Academic Affairs and program directors to ensure biology course content supports broader curriculum needs across allied health and science programs.
Program and Student Learning Outcomes
- Monitor student performance and course outcomes to help identify areas for instructional or curricular improvement.
- Participate in institutional efforts to assess and improve academic quality, including program reviews and general education initiatives.
- Provide input to support data-driven decision-making regarding course delivery and student achievement.
Professional Development and Institutional Participation
- Attend institutional in-service sessions (minimum twice annually) and participate in other faculty development activities to maintain instructional effectiveness and subject area knowledge.
- Stay current with developments in the biological sciences and in instructional technology, especially as it relates to hybrid and online learning.
- Participate in faculty meetings, academic committees, and institutional initiatives as assigned.
Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain regular communication with the Director of Academic Affairs and other institutional leaders.
- Collaborate with program directors and faculty across disciplines to ensure biology courses meet the needs of various programs.
- Respond promptly to academic communications and meet required administrative deadlines.
Faculty Workload
- Prepares for course delivery in advance based on the type and delivery method of the course, which may include lesson plans, assignments, quizzes and exams per the course syllabus based on the stated course objectives and the needs of the learners.
- Provides frequent, timely, and careful assessments of students’ progress.
- Administrative duties include grading of all assignments/assessments as well as submission of final course grades following standard operating procedures, accurately documenting student attendance.
- Provides students with timely feedback regarding their progress in the course.
- May serve as an academic advisor for designated students.
Occupational Experience
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience within the past 10 years as faculty member in a postsecondary setting delivering biological science content or as a secondary educator teaching biology
- Preferred: 2 years of experience with blended course delivery.
Educational Requirements:
- Masters level degree in a health science or allied health field (or a related field such as education with a focus in biological science).
