Job Overview:

The Mechatronics Engineer will be a core member of the engineering team responsible for the design, development, integration, and testing of our new drone dock system. This role requires a hands-on approach to developing sophisticated electromechanical systems that enable autonomous landing, securing, charging, and data transfer for our UAS. The ideal candidate will possess a strong blend of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering skills, with a passion for robotics and automation.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design & Development:

  • Design, develop, and prototype mechatronic systems and subsystems for the drone docking station, including precision alignment mechanisms, drone capture/release systems, automated charging interfaces, and environmental protection enclosures.
  • Create detailed CAD models, schematics, and engineering drawings for mechanical components and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Select and integrate appropriate sensors (e.g., proximity, optical, position), actuators (e.g., motors, solenoids, linear actuators), and control components.

Control Systems & Automation:

  • Develop and implement control algorithms for precise motion control, sensor fusion, and system automation within the docking station.
  • Program microcontrollers, PLCs, or embedded systems to manage docking operations and system health.
  • Integrate the docking system's control logic with the UAS and ground control software.

Prototyping, Testing & Validation:

  • Build and test functional prototypes of mechatronic systems and the overall drone dock.
  • Develop test plans and conduct rigorous testing to validate performance, reliability, and durability under various environmental conditions.
  • Analyze test data, troubleshoot issues, and iterate on designs to meet performance specifications and reliability targets.

Integration & Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with software engineers, electrical engineers, aerospace engineers, and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration of the mechatronic systems with the overall UAS ecosystem.
  • Participate in design reviews, providing expert input on mechatronic aspects.
  • Support the manufacturing and assembly processes for the drone dock system.

Documentation & Continuous Improvement:

  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and user manuals.
  • Stay current with advancements in mechatronics, robotics, and autonomous systems to propose and implement innovative solutions.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design practices and development processes.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3-5 yeas of hands-on experience in mechatronics system design, development, and integration.
  • Proven experience in designing and building electromechanical systems, including mechanisms, actuators, and sensor integration.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360) and PDM/PLM systems.
  • Experience with microcontroller programming (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ARM-based MCUs) and/or PLC programming.
  • Programming skills in languages such as C/C , Python, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of kinematics, dynamics, control theory, and material science.
  • Experience with various sensor technologies (e.g., LiDAR, vision systems, IR, ultrasonic) and their application in robotic systems.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., CAN, I2C, SPI, Ethernet).
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment for testing and troubleshooting (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with UAS, drone technology, or automated/robotic docking/charging systems is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of environmental sealing and designing for outdoor/rugged conditions is a plus.
