Position Summary: A Family Services Caseworker Trainee is the entry level of work providing direct social services to troubled individuals or families that are designed to sustain and improve the social, health, economic, behavioral and emotional functioning of customers. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive close supervision from a Licensed Social Worker and may be required to work evenings and on weekends. Work is performed in customers’ homes, schools, hospitals and other community settings. Employees may be required to deal with potentially hazardous situations.
Family Services Caseworker Trainee – CPS Assessor Child Protective Services assessors with the Cecil County Department of Social Services (DSS) are members of the Services Team and are critical to the agency’s mission of providing child welfare services to the citizens of Cecil County. CPS Assessors are responsible for investigating allegations of child abuse and neglect with at-risk families and children. CPS Assessors also play a key role in supporting caregivers and decreasing risks by developing and maintaining relationships with local law enforcement, school personnel, health care providers, and mental health resources. The main purpose of this position is to learn to investigate allegations of child maltreatment and assess safety, risk of harm and well-being of all children in family systems and childcare settings.
Position Responsibilities
1. CPS Assessors conduct and document investigations in accordance with COMAR, State and Local Policy and MOUs; and provide crisis intervention and education to families during the investigatory process.
2. CPS Assessors identify and alleviate safety and risk factors, including working with the families to develop written safety plans, so that children may stay with their families.
3. CPS Assessors work closely with other members of the DSS team by learning and understanding additional child welfare programs and functions including Intake, In-Home Services, Foster Care, Adoption, Recruitment.
4. CPS Assessors are included in various meetings and training and development activities. They may attend and testify at court, when needed.
