As a Sign Language Interpreter, you will play a critical role in ensuring equal access to communication for residents, visitors, and team members who are deaf or hard of hearing. This role requires advanced knowledge of American Sign Language, a high level of professionalism, and the ability to accurately interpret in a variety of settings. You should be detail-oriented, empathetic, and able to think quickly and clearly in dynamic situations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa in real-time.
- Facilitate clear and culturally appropriate communication in various settings including meetings, resident appointments, and staff interactions.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality in all assignments.
- Prepare in advance by reviewing relevant materials and agendas when available.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure accessibility needs are met throughout the community.
- Provide interpreting services during emergencies and high-stakes discussions as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of interpretation hours and submit documentation as required.
- Required:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- RID or NAD certification or comparable state-level credential.
- Strong interpersonal, listening, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
- Preferred:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
- Experience interpreting in housing, healthcare, or public service environments.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies and accessibility tools.
- Empathy: Understands the importance of inclusive communication and shows compassion.
- Attention to Detail: Accurately conveys spoken and signed information without altering intent.
- Professionalism: Maintains discretion, neutrality, and composure in all settings.
- Cultural Competency: Sensitive to the diverse backgrounds and needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
- Interpreting requires extended periods of concentration and visual focus.
- Frequent use of hands and arms to convey sign language.
- Ability to remain in a seated or standing position for extended periods.
- May require travel between community sites or buildings.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., materials, equipment).
