Financial Controller

Out client is seeking a highly skilled Controller to oversee the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role will manage financial processes across the organization, ensuring accurate reporting and supporting leadership with financial insights to drive strategic decision-making. The Controller will play a key role in supporting a growing business engaged in product development, licensing, distribution, and global sourcing within the fragrance and beauty industry. The position requires strong expertise in inventory accounting, product distribution finance, and operational financial analysis.

Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory accounting.

• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

• Ensure accurate financial reporting and maintain strong accounting policies and procedures.

• Manage debt reporting and ensure accurate tracking of debt obligations, covenant compliance, and lender reporting requirements.

Inventory & Cost Accounting

• Manage accounting related to inventory valuation, product costing, and capitalization of inventory and related costs.

• Ensure accurate accounting treatment for product development costs and capitalization where appropriate.

• Monitor inventory turnover, margin analysis, and cost of goods sold across product lines.

• Work closely with operations and supply chain teams to ensure accurate inventory controls and reporting.

Distribution & Revenue Accounting

• Oversee financial processes related to product distribution and retailer relationships.

• Manage accruals related to chargebacks, promotional allowances, and customer deductions common in retail distribution environments.

• Ensure accurate revenue recognition and monitoring of customer deductions and adjustments.

Tariffs & Global Supply Chain Accounting

• Monitor and account for tariffed products and import duties associated with global sourcing and manufacturing.

• Work with logistics and operations teams to ensure proper financial treatment of tariffs and landed product costs.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

• Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting.

• Perform variance analysis and provide insights to management regarding financial performance.

• Conduct special projects and financial analysis to support product launches, licensing agreements, pricing decisions, and operational improvements.

Internal Controls & Compliance

• Develop and maintain strong internal financial controls and accounting policies.

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and financial reporting standards.

• Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.

Leadership & Process Improvement

• Manage and develop the accounting team, currently consisting of an Accounting Manager and an AP Manager.

• Implement scalable financial systems and reporting processes to support company growth.

• Identify opportunities to improve financial efficiency and operational performance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred).

• 8–10 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

• Experience in manufacturing and/or distribution environments.

• Experience managing inventory accounting, distribution finance, and retail deductions/chargebacks.

• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.

• Experience with ERP/accounting systems and financial reporting tools, specifically QuickBooks and Smartsheet.

• Public accounting experience is preferred.

Prior experience in systems implementation/migration is preferred.
