What are the responsibilities and job description for the Litigation Associate position at Cavell Law, LLC?
The Opportunity
Cavell Law is a growing boutique litigation firm built around professional autonomy, sound judgment, and high-quality advocacy without the bureaucracy or burnout of large firms. We are seeking a litigation associate anywhere from a newly admitted attorney to one with up to a decade of civil litigation experience. Whether you’re just starting your career or you’re a seasoned litigator ready for greater autonomy, this role offers meaningful responsibility, regular courtroom exposure, and the opportunity to run cases with real authority, not just task execution.
This position is ideal for an associate who enjoys litigation, wants to sharpen judgment and advocacy skills, and values a lean, professional environment with direct access to firm leadership and full staff support. No book of business required. There is also a quarterly incentive program for those that go above and beyond what's required.
What We’re Looking For
- Licensure: Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio with no disciplinary history in any state.
- Experience: Anywhere from a newly-minted attorney to approximately 10 years of civil litigation experience.
- Courtroom Credibility: Experience appearing in Ohio courts is a plus (Cuyahoga County experience strongly preferred for more senior candidates).
- Skillset: Exceptional legal research and writing skills.
- Mindset: Demonstrated (or developing) ability to manage files independently, exercise sound judgment, and balance aggressive advocacy with the client’s objectives.
- Tech-Savvy: Comfort using modern technology, including Apple/Mac computers, Google Workspace, Clio, Lexis
- Transportation: Must have reliable transportation during the workday.
- Billable Target: 1,500 annual hours supported by consistent case flow and realistic staffing, not quota-driven pressure.
What You’ll Do
- Case Ownership: Manage an active litigation caseload with increasing independence as experience grows including complex commercial disputes, title litigation, and real estate matters.
- Client Advocacy: Communicate directly with clients to understand facts and goals, providing timely updates and responding to inquiries effectively.
- Strategy: Discuss options, legal strategies, and creative solutions so clients can make informed decisions.
- High-Level Advocacy: Conduct thorough legal research & draft correspondence, pleadings, motions, discovery, etc.
- Courtroom Presence: Take and defend lay and expert witness depositions, attend hearings, arbitrations, mediations, and trials (first or second chair, depending on experience).
- Strategic Mentorship: Participate in regular strategy sessions and work directly with the Firm principal on judgment calls and litigation execution, with mentorship focused on developing independent trial lawyers.
- Business Growth: Business development is not required for this role, though origination credit is provided.
