What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Buyer position at Cato Corporation?
JOB SUMMARY:
Assists the Buyer in the procurement and control of merchandise while learning the job fundamentals necessary to become a Buyer. The Assistant Buyer performs administrative tasks and data entry related to specific merchandise departments of the company. Using multiple computer applications, the Assistant Buyer assists the Buyer by inputting purchase orders, tracking samples, and communicating with vendors and coworkers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs administrative duties when necessary, i.e., routing mail, scheduling appointments, filing, and assisting with special projects.
- Purchase order management:
- Enters, maintains, and organizes purchase orders for the merchandising department.
- Ensures timely delivery of merchandise through consistent communication and follow-up with the vendors.
- Assists with flex bid packages.
- Sample management:
- Requests and organizes all samples including fits, advertising, best sellers, and product development for the assigned area.
- Business analysis:
- Critically analyzes merchandising reports.
- Recaps reports as directed.
- Understands and performs retail math.
- Effectively interacts with vendors and coworkers to achieve department and company goals.
- Completes assigned tasks thoroughly, accurately and on a timely basis. Pays attention to detail. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.Adapts easily to changes in workload and assignments.
- Support special projects and cross-functional initiatives as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree required.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Experience in retail sales/planning/distribution is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Must have strong quantitative and qualitative skills. Possess a sense of urgency and the ability to think critically and multitask.
