Position Summary

We are seeking a reliable and patient-focused Pharmacy Technician to support our pharmacists and clinical team. All work is under the supervision of licensed pharmacist(s). The employee serves as a Pharmacy Technician, Point of Sale Billing (POS) Specialist, and Operations Technician performing a combination of duties in POS billing, pharmacy workflow, and operations.

The purpose of this position involves preparation, review, supply functions, dispensing and control of medications, managing inventory, assisting customers, and other pharmaceutical products that are supplied by the pharmacy service to the ambulatory patients, nursing staff and medical providers. .

As a Point of Sell Billing (POS) Specialist, the technician will process claims on-line to health insurance carriers (for the cost of pharmaceuticals furnished to patients who are covered by health insurance carriers). The technician also provides administrative support and manages certain day-to-day pharmacy functions.

 

This is a full-time position. Monday to Friday (8 hours/day with time for lunch).

Core Responsibilities & Duties

An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Greeting patients, answering phone calls, and directing clinical questions to the pharmacist(s).
  • Correlates instructions on the order with pharmacy policies to determine the quantities to be dispensed, formulary exclusion violations, appropriateness of provider prescribing privileges, accidental omission of medication orders, and whether dosages are within acceptable ranges based on patient age and weight.
  • Counts tablets and capsules using counting trays or the tablet counter and place them in the proper sized vials for prescriptions.
  • Labeling bottles - reading complex medication instructions and Latin abbreviations from medical records and pharmacist notes on what information needs to be typed on the prescription label.
  • Is aware of the need to always maintain accountability of controlled drugs and checks the inventory for accuracy. Knows how to retrieve data from the computer to rectify inaccuracies. Reports inaccuracies to the pharmacist.
  • Inventory management - ordering, stocking, and organizing medications, as well as removing expired or recalled items.
  • Processing, submitting, and resolving issues with insurance claims.
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date patient, medication, and safety records.
  • Adhering to strict states and federal regulations, such as HIPPA, and maintaining a clean, safe workspace.

Qualifications:

Qualifications 

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience working in a pharmacy setting/as a pharmacy technician.
  • Experience in prescription processing, inventory management, and insurance billing.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of pharmacy technician specialized training(s).

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) to be certified upon hire or have the ability to obtain within 90 days.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

To be successful, the pharmacy assistant must possess a blend of technical and interpersonal skills. Experience must have provided basic knowledge of:

  • Pharmaceutical nomenclature.
  • Pharmaceuticals including generic names, normal dosages, dosage forms, and uses of medications to determine when an order for a medication should be questioned and be able to present the problem to the pharmacist accurately and concisely.
  • Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals. Calculating doses to match physician’s order with pharmacy stocks and filling prescriptions.
  • Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures.
  • Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, dispensing, repacking, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Commitment to patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPPA.
  • Follow strict protocols for infection control.  

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Fast-paced clinical environment with frequent patient interactions.

  • Use of electronic health records (EHR) systems and computers for documentation.
