Preconstruction Engineer – Structured Cabling

Department: Engineering / Preconstruction

Location: Abilene Tx

Role Type: Full-Time

About Our Client

Our client is a nationally recognized leader in structured cabling and low-voltage systems integration, with a track record spanning multiple decades of delivering complex telecommunications infrastructure projects. Headquartered in the United States with offices and project sites across the country, the company serves a broad range of commercial, industrial, and mission-critical clients. Their core offerings include structured cabling design and installation, fiber and copper infrastructure, and technology systems integration. Guided by a family-centric culture and a strong commitment to safety as their number one core value, this organization consistently invests in its people, its processes, and its communities to drive long-term excellence.

Job Description

The Preconstruction Engineer – Structured Cabling plays a pivotal role during the early phases of project development, serving as the critical bridge between design, estimating, and field operations. Day-to-day, this individual collaborates closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Estimating teams to develop the technical documentation — including bills of materials, cable appendices, and submittal packages — that set projects up for seamless execution. Their work directly impacts client satisfaction and operational efficiency by ensuring that structured cabling designs are constructible, accurate, and ready for the field.

This role exists to meet the growing need for technical precision and coordination before a project ever breaks ground. The Preconstruction Engineer identifies lead-time risks, supports installation sequencing strategies, and conducts constructability reviews that prevent costly surprises downstream. They work cross-functionally with vendors, manufacturers, and internal project teams, and are responsible for formally handing off all preconstruction deliverables to the local execution team.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, proactive problem-solver who is passionate about structured cabling systems, thrives in a collaborative environment, and is energized by the challenge of turning complex design documents into actionable field-ready plans. This position reports to senior project leadership and interfaces regularly with Project Managers, Engineers, Estimators, and external vendors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uphold safety as the number one core value by following all safe work practices and adhering to company and client worksite policies.
  • Promote company core values to foster and safeguard a family-centric culture across all interactions.
  • Ensure compliance with internal regulations and standardized preconstruction processes.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Estimating to define and refine the technical scope of work for structured cabling systems.
  • Develop detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) based on design documents, site assessments, and project requirements, and hand them off to the project team for procurement and execution.
  • Create cable appendices and supporting documents to define cabling infrastructure and ensure consistency in field implementation.
  • Prepare structured cabling submittals aligned with design intent and specifications; coordinate the formal submission process and transfer approved submittals to the project team.
  • Participate in project planning and scheduling meetings to provide input on material lead times, installation sequencing, and overall cabling strategy.
  • Conduct constructability reviews and site walks to validate design accuracy and field feasibility, and communicate findings and recommendations to the execution team.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers during preconstruction to support material selections and lead-time planning; relay confirmed selections to the field team.
  • Ensure all preconstruction deliverables (BOMs, submittals, cable appendices, technical clarifications) are clearly packaged and formally handed over to the local project team prior to execution.
  • Support value engineering efforts and provide technical input during project transitions to optimize field performance and reduce risk.
  • Continuously improve preconstruction practices to drive operational efficiency and excellence.
  • Travel as required by project needs.

Required Experience / Skills

  • 3–5 years of experience in the structured cabling, low-voltage, or telecommunications industry, with a focus on design coordination, preconstruction support, or technical project delivery.
  • Proven ability to work with construction drawings, specifications, and cable routing plans, including reviewing and interpreting system layouts and riser diagrams.
  • Hands-on experience developing Bills of Materials (BOMs), cable schedules/appendices, and submittals for structured cabling or low-voltage infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with Project Managers, Engineers, Estimators, and Vendors to support preconstruction deliverables and planning.
  • Experience conducting field/site walks and constructability reviews, and translating findings into actionable documentation.
  • Familiarity with material takeoffs, design validation, and technical handoffs to field execution teams.
  • Understanding of industry standards and installation best practices (e.g., TIA/EIA, BICSI).
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and project management tools such as Procore or PlanGrid.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and cross-functional team coordination.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple deliverables simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proactive problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify and communicate risks related to design, materials, or scheduling.

Nice-to-Haves

  • BICSI RCDD certification or other structured cabling certifications.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification.
  • Experience supporting or influencing project schedule development as it relates to long-lead items and installation sequencing.
  • Background in a fast-growing or field-operations-heavy organization.
  • Comfort working independently with minimal supervision across multiple concurrent projects.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field required; equivalent work experience may be considered.

Pay & Benefits Summary

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Travel reimbursement per company policy.
  • Opportunities for professional development and industry certification support.
  • A collaborative, family-centric workplace culture committed to safety and excellence.
