Summary:
The position of Counselor provides counseling and mental health services for individuals and groups dealing with personal, family and other issues that may impact students’ educational success and staff well-being. The position also collaborates with colleagues throughout the college and contributes to departmental, student services and college growth.
This is a full-time, benefited, 10-month position.
Responsibilities:
The Counselor for the Wellness Center is responsible for providing short-term counseling services to students, as well as consultation services to faculty and staff. The Counselor maintains a high degree of both professionalism and confidentiality and works with a diverse group of individuals. This position reports to the Director of Counseling.
Essential Duties
Personal Counseling and Mental Health Services
- Provide short-term, professional counseling services to students regarding personal matters through individual, group, and couples counseling, as well as consultation services to faculty and staff
- Conduct crisis counseling during regular hours and after hours
- Provide other mental health services as appropriate and needed
Outreach Programming
- Provide presentations to a variety of groups and classes on topic areas related to emotional well-being and academic success such as test anxiety, stress management, mindfulness and resiliency
- Respond to the needs of residence halls and classrooms
- Assist in the organization and implementation of various mental health screening programs
Academic Assistance
- Assist with academic skills as needed
Professional Development
- Enhance and maintain knowledge and skills by attending professional conferences and workshops
- Receive weekly administrative and clinical supervision from the Director of Counseling
- Maintain professional conduct and adhere to professional ethical standards and the practices of Counseling Services
Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate case notes of clients seen as well as other necessary clinical documentation
- Provide accurate monthly reports to the Director of Counseling
Student Services and Casper College Activities
- Support the broader mission of the College and Student Services by attending division meetings and sharing responsibilities for various committees and projects on campus
- Maintain good relations with employees of the college and community members
- Serve on various professional committees in the college, community and state
- Assist with and perform other duties as needed
Professional Development
- Enhance and maintain knowledge and skills by attending professional conferences and workshops
- Receive weekly administrative and clinical supervision from the Director of Counseling
- Maintain professional conduct and adhere to professional ethical standards and the practices of Counseling Services.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in counseling, psychology, or counseling-related field
- Licensed or license-eligible in mental health related area in the state of Wyoming
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work with individuals in regard to personal, career and academic issues and provide group and couples counseling
- Demonstrated ability to provide outreach, prevention, consultation and seminar presentations
- Ability to appropriately assess and intervene in crisis situations
- Considerable knowledge of professional ethics and the ability to apply to current work
- Ability to understand and relate well to a college setting, work effectively with colleagues and to contribute to departmental growth and changes
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with emerging adults in an educational setting
- Experience working in higher education
Supplemental Information
Work Environment:
Typical work environment is an office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Non-routine occasional work may be spent around the community. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions. Frequent interaction with the public may occur (students, employees, community members). Work is usually performed during the normal workday, however, early morning, late evening and weekend work may be required. Travel to work related events, conferences, and other related duties may be required.
Physical Demands:
Employee is regularly required to sit, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required; less frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required.
