What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fall Student Employment – Library Aide 1 position at Carroll College?

Duties and Responsibilities: Library Aides work in a team-oriented environment to support academic life at Carroll College, assist patrons in various ways, and ensure the Library is a welcoming and effective study space. Library Aides possess excellent customer service skills, a keen attention to detail, and exemplary academic ability. Library Aides work during the Library’s open hours.
Library Aide 1 assists in the daily operations of the Library. Tasks include:
- Provide excellent customer service by greeting people as they come in the library and assisting them as needed.
- Provide services at the circulation desk, including checking materials out to patrons, returning items, and offering general assistance to patrons.
- Perform opening and/or closing duties under the supervision of a Library staff member.
- Answer basic informational, directional and library policy questions, help patrons locate materials in the stacks, provide basic copy machine assistance.
- Assist patrons with library resources, such as finding books, using Saints Search (our online catalog), and locating databases or other library resources.
- Performs stacks maintenance tasks including shelving, shelf-reading, shifting, and other special projects as assigned.
- Assist patrons with equipment such as computers, printers, scanners, and other technology.
- Conducting regular counts of how many people are in the library and where they are sitting.
- Tidy and “reset” our beautiful space through hourly walk-throughs.
- General office work (data entry, book repairs, searching stacks for items that need to be bound, and maintaining statistics).
- Answer telephones when staff members are not available.
- Performs other duties or projects as needed.
Qualifications: Interested students should be reliable and self-motivated with excellent attention to detail and able to demonstrate excellent customer service skills. Since the library interacts with various members of the public and the Carroll community, a professional and friendly demeanor is required.

Approximate Hours/Week: 6 to 10 hours per week
Note: We start off scheduling work study with 6 hours and when fully trained and having demonstrated their ability, can increase up to 10; greater hours can be earned by being cross-trained in an area like book repair, archives, or other areas of the Library.
Special Time/Schedule Requirements:
- Working a minimum of 6 hours during Library Open Hours.
- Must be willing to work one of the following shifts; weekday opening (7:45am-9:00 am), closing (9:00 pm-10:00pm M-Thursday; 3:30pm – 4:30pm Friday; or, 7:00pm – 8:00pm Sunday), or two consecutive hours on a weekend.
Length of Employment: Academic Year
Wage Rate: $12.00/hour
