What are the responsibilities and job description for the Payroll Tax Accountant position at CAROLINA PRG?
The Payroll Tax Accountant will support payroll tax compliance and reporting on a temporary basis, ensuring accurate and timely filings, payments, and reconciliations. This role partners closely with Payroll, HR, and Accounting to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare, file, and reconcile federal, state, and local payroll tax returns (including quarterly and annual filings)
- Ensure timely payment of payroll taxes, including withholdings and employer taxes
- Reconcile payroll tax accounts and support month-end and quarter-end close activities
- Research and resolve payroll tax discrepancies, notices, and inquiries from taxing authorities
- Support year-end processes, including W-2, W-3, and related reconciliations
- Assist with unemployment tax filings, rate notices, and agency correspondence
- Partner with Payroll and HR to ensure accurate setup of employee tax data and deductions
- Maintain payroll tax documentation and support internal or external audits
- Assist with payroll tax projects, system updates, or process improvements
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and payroll tax policies
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 2 years of payroll tax, payroll accounting, or related experience
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
- Experience reconciling payroll tax accounts and handling tax notices
- Strong Excel skills and experience with payroll systems and ERPs
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Preferred (Nice to Have):
- Experience with multi-state payroll tax compliance
- Experience working with third-party payroll providers (ADP, Paycom, Workday, UKG, etc.)
- Prior experience in a contract or project-based role
- CPP or FPC certification
