Position Summary

The Painter/Blaster II is a skilled industrial coatings professional responsible for independently performing abrasive blasting, surface preparation, and application of industrial paint and protective coating systems on fabricated steel products and components. This position works with limited supervision and is expected to maintain production, quality, and safety standards while ensuring proper coating application and surface preparation.

Essential Duties

  • Operate blasting and painting equipment.
  • Measure surface profile and cleanliness levels.
  • Apply coatings to required thickness specifications.
  • Mix and apply multi-component coatings.
  • Maintain production schedules and quality requirements.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards preferred.
  • Ability to use coating inspection equipment.

Experience

  • 2–5 years of industrial painting and blasting experience.

Hours

  • Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 4:30pm
  • Overtime may be required.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 2–5 years of industrial painting and abrasive blasting experience.
  • Experience operating blasting and paint application equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, specifications, and paint system requirements.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation standards and coating application procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Perform abrasive blasting to required surface preparation standards.
  • Prepare surfaces by cleaning, grinding, sanding, masking, and inspecting materials prior to coating.
  • Apply primers, coatings, and finish paints using conventional, airless, and pressure-pot spray equipment.
  • Mix paints, coatings, and solvents according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Measure and verify wet and dry film thickness requirements.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure quality and compliance with customer specifications.
  • Identify coating defects and perform corrections or touch-ups as necessary.
  • Maintain blasting and painting equipment and report maintenance needs.
  • Safely handle coating materials, solvents, and related chemicals.
  • Assist with training Painter/Blaster I employees.
  • Maintain productivity while meeting safety and quality expectations.
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety requirements.
  • Strong understanding of industrial coating systems.
  • Knowledge of abrasive blasting techniques and surface preparation requirements.
  • Ability to use paint thickness gauges and inspection tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications and production documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet production deadlines.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience in structural steel, heavy fabrication, transformer manufacturing, or industrial equipment painting.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Overhead crane experience.
  • Knowledge of SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards.
  • Experience with epoxy, urethane, zinc-rich primers, and high-performance coating systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and climb throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments with exposure to noise, dust, paint fumes, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including:
    • Respirator
    • Protective coveralls
    • Safety glasses
    • Hearing protection
    • Gloves
    • Steel-toed boots
