POSITION: CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY CARPENTRY & GENERAL CONSTRUCTION TEACHER
LOCATION: Career and Technology Academy
POSITION SUMMARY: To prepare high school students for careers and/or post-secondary education opportunities in carpentry and general construction, including pathways within the broader construction trades.
REPORTS TO: School Principal
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE: At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:
- Have a valid teacher’s certificate or be eligible under the licensure process for Professional and Technical Education Teachers COMAR 13A.12.03: https://marylandpublicschools.org/about/pages/dee/certification/pte_safa.aspx
- Possess or be eligible for Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) 30 hour certification.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions. At the time of application, the candidate must have:
- Knowledge of federal, state and local building codes and regulations, including residential and light commercial construction standards.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and methods used in carpentry and general construction, including framing, roofing, finishing, and site preparation, as well as foundational knowledge of related trades such as basic residential electrical, plumbing, and masonry.
- Demonstrated skill in the safe and effective use of hand tools and power tools such as saws, drills, nail guns, levels, squares, and measuring devices.
- Ability to interpret and apply building plans, blueprints, specifications, and construction drawings, and use formulas basic to the trade to calculate measurements, angles, and material quantities.
- Knowledge of construction materials including lumber, fasteners, adhesives, concrete, masonry materials, piping, and basic electrical components, as well as their appropriate applications.
- Demonstrated understanding of basic residential electrical, plumbing, and masonry systems sufficient to support instruction in general construction applications.
- Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel and community members.
- Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Provide appropriate instruction, learning experiences, and management of a performance-based carpentry and general construction program.
- Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
- Prepare students for entry-level employment, post-secondary education, and attainment of recognized and approved industry credentials in the construction trades.
- Support student attainment of recognized and approved industry credentials, including maintaining or obtaining required certifications necessary to teach, proctor, and/or administer credentialing assessments aligned to the program.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance in academic knowledge and skills mastery following required procedures and practices.
- Establish and maintain a safe work-based learning laboratory environment that supports program-embedded, career-connected learning and/or school-based enterprise activities, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and all applicable safety regulations.
- Work with Career and Technology Education (CTE) staff members to establish and maintain a team approach to interdisciplinary instruction.
- Assist in evaluating and validating curriculum with members of the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) made up of members of the business and construction community.
- Identify materials and equipment needed with PAC to maintain and implement a carpentry and construction program that reflects current industry standards.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor equipment inventories and usage logs, ensuring appropriate use, care, maintenance, storage, and accountability of all tools, materials, and equipment.
- Follow school and district procedures for the procurement of equipment, tools, and consumable materials necessary to support instructional activities and maintain an industry-relevant program.
- Work with PAC, employers, and community groups to promote and advance the carpentry and construction program.
- Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community.
- Participate in and support SkillsUSA and other program-related activities.
- Comes to work promptly every day.
- Works under stress and meets all deadlines.
OTHER DUTIES: Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might reasonably be assigned. Performs related work as required or assigned by the Career and Technology Academy Principal. This position includes 35 hours of required professional development to occur prior to the start of the school year, which will be compensated in accordance with requirements of the negotiated agreement for workshop pay. These hours are above and beyond hours required for traditional new teachers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires significant periods of standing, walking, bending, lifting, and performing construction-related tasks. Duties are performed in a classroom and laboratory/shop environment and may include the operation of tools and equipment, lifting and carrying materials of up to 50lbs, climbing ladders, and working in various indoor and outdoor conditions typical of a construction setting.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten (10) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools’ salary schedule for Career & Technical Education (CTE) teachers at the Career & Technology Academy. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the policy on evaluation established by the Calvert County Public Schools.
