Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Prototype Press Operator with over 10 years of hands-on experience in operating both hydraulic and mechanical presses for prototype and low-volume production work. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge working with dual-phase materials, including aluminum and high-strength steel, and will play a critical role in die tryout, press setup, and first-piece inspection. This position supports the development and validation of tooling and part designs for new programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a variety of hydraulic and mechanical prototype presses, ranging from low to high tonnage.
- Set up and adjust tooling and dies, ensuring proper alignment and safe operation.
- Perform die tryouts and provide feedback to tooling and engineering teams for refinement and optimization.
- Work with dual-phase materials such as advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and aluminum alloys, adjusting process parameters accordingly.
- Interpret part drawings, process sheets, and inspection criteria to ensure part conformity.
- Conduct first-article inspection and in-process quality checks using standard measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.).
- Collaborate closely with toolmakers, designers, and engineers to troubleshoot forming issues and suggest improvements.
- Maintain detailed documentation of setup parameters, press operations, and tooling modifications.
- Ensure all safety protocols and company standards are followed during press operations.
- Perform routine maintenance checks and assist with minor repairs on press equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a press operation environment, including prototype and/or tool tryout.
- Proficiency operating both hydraulic and mechanical presses.
- Extensive hands-on experience with die tryout processes and tooling evaluation.
- Strong understanding of metal forming, particularly with dual-phase steel and aluminum materials.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.
- Solid understanding of safety standards and procedures in a press room environment.
- Skilled in using measurement and inspection tools for quality verification.
- Excellent problem-solving and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an automotive, aerospace, or advanced manufacturing prototype environment.
- Familiarity with press control systems and data collection tools.
- Basic CNC or fabrication experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate presses and inspect parts.
- Tolerance for working around loud machinery and in a manufacturing environment.
