Job Responsibilities include the following:

 Support a 24/7 manufacturing process      

  • Be available on nights and weekends.
  • Interact with shifts, regularly spending time listening to people, observing operations, and checking data.
  • Inspire good performance.

Serve as site safety compliance manager

  • Lead the incident and near miss investigation process.
  • Lead SCOPE audits for Cardinal FG Portage and participate in SCOPE audits of other plants as needed.
  • Develop and administer the site’s OSHA programs.
  • Manage the plant’s safety audit process and behavior based safety initiatives.
  • Implement programs as required by OSHA regulations.
  • Track all course and certification completions.
  • Log data for any incidents into the Velocity EHS software.
  • Conduct OSHA safety checks and walk-arounds.
  • Maintain the OSHA 300 log.

Manage site safety

  • Work with other managers to set the site’s safety goals.
  • Run reports to assist in decision making. Interpret the data to identify areas to target for improvement.  Be a partner in the decision-making process.
  • Lead plant-wide safety meetings. Be liaison to staff with input from meetings. Communicate action to be taken back to employees.
  • Monthly schedule and conduct reviews of safety programs and checklists so all areas are reviewed and updated annually.
  • Track checklist completions in a database.
  • Annually conduct PPE assessments to research, source and ensure PPE needs are met.
  • Keep site managers informed of safety practices and records throughout the company.
  • Oversee the safety shoe and eyeglass programs.

    Conduct safety training and testing

    ·      Manage the safety training process.  Provide training on a variety of safety topics to employees.

    ·      Administer and conduct OSHA required testing, such as hearing and lung capacity spirometry tests.

    Manage the Worker’s Compensation program

    ·      Work directly with Workers’ Comp provider to pay bills.

    ·      Complete required safety incident reporting.

    ·      Coordinal safe return-to-work program for injured employees.

    Serve as an employee resource

    ·      Be available to answer employee questions.  Be willing to get information employees need.

    ·      Be approachable and trustworthy.  Keep confidential information private.  Respect employees of all levels.

    ·      Talk with people in such a way as to deflate tension and frustration and build confidence.

    ·      Be a person of action, following up on employee concerns.

    ·      Write a monthly newsletter article to keep employees informed about safety concerns/issues, and give them company and industry updates.

     Collaborate with others.

    ·         Be active in production and department meetings, sharing what is happening in your area.

    ·         Be an active member of plant committees that need your support or decision-making.

    ·         Implement best practices from other Cardinal facilities.  Communicate with counterparts to learn what they are doing.

    Develop skills for the future

    ·         Work with managers to assess future training needs.

    ·         Provide training for managers and supervisors to increase their knowledge of safety practices to improve our safety culture.

    ·         Prepare self to be capable of taking on increased responsibilities across time.  Continue to learn.  Work together to identify training/mentoring that may be helpful.

    ·         Keep a back-up trained for this position.

     Other responsibilities

    ·      Develop and deliver training within area of expertise.

    ·      Oversee and administer the safety recognition plan.

    ·      Present information and answer questions at employee meetings.

    Help accomplish plant goals (targets should be produced by each department)

    Develop goals you can accomplish that align with your department’s and plant’s goals.  Example areas follow:

    ·         Safety – incident rate, improvements in safe acts through PPE inspections and conditions, PPE use, plant damage, and housekeeping guidelines followed.

    ·         Quality/Customer needs– quality of work, internal reject rate; customer needs met – may include customer reject rate, customer visits, effectiveness of corrective actions, and on time delivery.

    ·         Production – work efficiently and effectively to gain high yields while controlling costs.

    ·         Teamwork – employees respect and support each other and function together well. Job rotation occurs as planned. Conflict is handled swiftly and skillfully.

    ·         Initiative and Development – improvement projects identified and completed with employees taking active role; results verify impact. Training in job procedures and cross-training complete; back-ups are in place. Learning events attended; employees take on increasing responsibilities.

    ·         Attendance – strive for low absenteeism and tardiness.

    Education/knowledge requirements

    • Must have Bachelor’s in Safety or related field or equivalent experience in either management or safety.
    • Knowledgeable in the instruction of required OSHA training.
    • Experience with behavior based safety program is helpful.

     

    Skills needed

    • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Able to comfortably speak in front of large group
    • Ability to influence others in making recommendations for improvement.
    • Strong skills in organizing and tracking large quantities of data.
    • Ability to log data into and retrieve reports from various HRIS systems and safety tracking software.
    • Proficient in safety related computer programs and Microsoft Office products.
    • Ability to interpret and understand manufacturing required OSHA regulations

     

    Physical requirements and equipment to use

    • Physical requirements include walking, climbing stairs.
    • Equipment to use includes computers.
