Summary:
Carbon Builders is a General Trades and Steel building provider, founded in 2022 and located in Grand Rapids, MI. Carbon Builders is a trade partner setting high standards related to safety, quality, and value.
Key Responsibilities:
· Crew Leadership & Field Execution
· Directly supervise and coordinate the daily work of the ironworker crew on assigned projects.
· Plan and sequence daily/weekly erection activities to keep the job on schedule.
· Read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and erection plans to direct crew work.
· Coordinate crane picks, rigging, and material staging with the crew and other trades on site.
· Track material deliveries and flag shortages or discrepancies to the Steel Division Manager.
· Maintain accurate daily reports, crew time, and productivity tracking.
· Safety
· Enforce all CarbonSix safety policies and OSHA steel erection requirements (29 CFR 1926 Subpart R) on site.
· Conduct daily toolbox talks and pre-task safety briefings before erection activities.
· Inspect rigging, fall protection, and equipment prior to use; correct or stop unsafe conditions immediately.
· Report incidents, near-misses, and safety concerns to the Steel Division Manager promptly.
· Quality & Coordination
· Ensure erected steel conforms to contract drawings, specifications, and AISC/AWS standards.
· Identify and communicate field conflicts, RFIs, or design issues to the Steel Division Manager.
· Coordinate with other trade foremen on site to maintain sequencing and avoid conflicts.
· Support punch list and close-out activities for steel scope.
· Team Development
· Train and mentor ironworkers, including apprentices, on proper techniques and safety practices.
· Provide input to the Steel Division Manager on crew performance, staffing needs, and discipline issues.
· Model a strong work ethic and professional conduct on site at all times.
Qualifications:
· 5 years of experience as a structural/miscellaneous ironworker, with at least 1-2 years leading a crew.
· Strong working knowledge of steel erection means and methods, rigging, and signaling.
· Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and erection plans.
· Working knowledge of OSHA steel erection standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart R).
· Experience with fall protection systems, crane coordination, and rigging inspection.
· Strong communication and leadership skills; ability to direct a crew under schedule pressure.
· Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites in Michigan as needed.
