Summary:
Carbon Builders is a General Trades and Steel building provider, founded in 2022 and located in Grand Rapids, MI. Carbon Builders is a trade partner setting high standards related to safety, quality, and value.
Key Responsibilities:
· Business & Project Ownership
· Own division P&L: pricing, budgeting, cost tracking, and profitability for all steel scopes.
· Estimate and bid steel packages, including take-offs, subcontractor/supplier pricing, and proposal development.
· Serve as primary client and GC point of contact for steel scope, from proposal through project close-out.
· Develop and manage project schedules for fabrication, delivery, and erection sequencing.
· Negotiate and manage purchase orders and subcontracts with steel fabricators, detailers, and suppliers.
· Field & Team Leadership
· Directly supervise the Steel Foreman; provide coaching, performance feedback, and career development.
· Ensure adequate crew staffing and coordinate ironworker assignments across active projects with the Foreman.
· Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, quality, and safety compliance.
· Resolve field issues, RFIs, and coordination conflicts with other trades in a timely manner.
· Safety & Quality
· Champion a zero-incident safety culture; enforce CarbonSix safety standards and OSHA compliance on all steel work.
· Review and approve rigging plans, crane picks, and erection procedures for structural adequacy and safety.
· Ensure work meets contract drawings, specifications, and AISC/AWS quality standards.
· Administration
· Track division KPIs (safety, schedule, cost, quality) and report performance to executive leadership.
· Maintain submittal logs, shop drawing review, and material tracking for steel packages.
· Support hiring, onboarding, and training for steel division personnel.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of experience in structural/miscellaneous steel construction, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong working knowledge of steel erection means and methods, rigging, and AISC Code of Standard Practice.
- Experience estimating and managing steel scopes on commercial or industrial projects.
- Working knowledge of OSHA steel erection standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart R).
- Ability to read structural drawings, shop drawings, and specifications.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites in Michigan and Florida as needed.
- OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- Experience managing both fabrication coordination and field erection.
- Prior experience building or scaling a division or business unit within a general contractor.
