What are the responsibilities and job description for the Product Designer (UI/UX) position at Capsule?
Capsule is building an AI-powered memory companion that helps people preserve their stories, voice, and personality—and enables families to interact with that legacy for generations. We sit at the intersection of AI, psychology, design, and storytelling. This is a deeply human product, and design will be central to making it trustworthy, simple, and beautiful.
You’ll be our first dedicated designer, partnering directly with the founder and engineering. As our Product Designer, you’ll own the end-to-end experience across web and mobile. You’ll translate powerful AI capabilities into intuitive, emotionally sensitive flows for non-tech-savvy users, evolve our visual interaction language, and build the foundations of a v1 design system. You’ll work closely with engineering and product to ship quickly, learn from users, and raise the bar on craft.
- Own the product design lifecycle from concept to developer-ready specs.
- Design core journeys (onboarding, capturing stories/voice, viewing/interacting with a “Capsule,” sharing/family access, settings/privacy).
- Build and maintain a design system (components, patterns, typography, spacing, accessibility standards) to support fast, consistent shipping.
- Partner tightly with engineering to iterate quickly, ensure quality in implementation, and unblock delivery.
- Run lightweight user research (usability tests, concept validation, iterative testing) and turn insights into product improvements.
- Set and evolve the visual/interaction direction: premium, calm, and clear, while staying grounded in usability and trust.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product and marketing on roadmap priorities, growth experiments, and lifecycle moments.
- Portfolio demonstrating strong product thinking and craft: clear problem framing, rationale, iterations, and shipped outcomes.
- 3-6 years of product design experience (UX UI), ideally including a premium consumer (B2C) product.
- Experience designing consumer app experiences across web and/or mobile (iOS/Android).
- Strong visual design fundamentals: typography, hierarchy, spacing, layout, and interaction states.
- Proficiency with modern tools like Figma (and comfort with prototyping tools such as Framer).
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers (clear specs, pragmatic tradeoffs, systems thinking).
- Self-starter mindset: comfortable with ambiguity, able to prioritize, and excited to build early.
- Accessibility and inclusive design experience.
- Startup experience (especially 0 to 1 and/or scaling beyond launch).
- Interest in psychology, storytelling, memory/legacy, or sensitive/emotional user contexts.
- Familiarity with front-end constraints or lightweight coding (or using AI coding tools like Cursor) to speed collaboration.
