The Data Governance Specialist is responsible for establishing and maintaining enterprise data governance artifacts, ensuring transparency of data flows, consistent documentation of data exchanges, and effective population of the enterprise data catalog (Alation). This role supports trusted, compliant, and well-governed data across systems and external vendor integrations.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Flow & Lineage:
Create and maintain end-to-end data flow diagrams across source systems, integrations, and downstream consumers
Support data lineage documentation to improve traceability and auditability
Data Exchange Documentation:
Document field-level metadata, definitions, business rules, and data usage for extracts shared with external vendors
Maintain detailed records of data extracts, transformations, and transmission processes
Governance Policies:
Develop and document policies and standards for data exchange, including security, privacy, and compliance requirements
Ensure adherence to enterprise data governance frameworks and controls
Data Catalog (Alation):
Populate and maintain Alation data catalog with datasets, glossary terms, metadata, lineage, and ownership information
Collaborate with data owners/stewards to ensure catalog completeness and accuracy
Data Quality & Stewardship:
Support data quality initiatives through documentation of rules, issues, and remediation tracking
Partner with stakeholders to improve data transparency and usability
Stakeholder Collaboration:
Work with business, IT, and vendor teams to gather requirements and validate data assets
Act as a bridge between technical and business teams to ensure clarity of data definitions and usage
Qualifications & Experience:
For B2 Level (3–5 years):
3–5 years of experience in data governance, data management, or data analysis
Hands-on experience with data catalog tools (preferably Alation) or similar platforms
Working knowledge of data modeling, metadata management, and data lineage concepts
Experience documenting data flows, field-level mappings, and system integrations
Strong SQL/data querying fundamentals and familiarity with relational data structures
For C1 Level (6–10 years):
6–10 years of experience in data governance, metadata management, or data stewardship roles
Proven experience leading data catalog initiatives (Alation preferred) and governance artifact development
Deep understanding of data exchange standards, policies, and regulatory considerations
Experience defining and implementing data governance policies and frameworks
Ability to drive cross-functional alignment with senior business and technology stakeholders
Core Skills:
Data Governance, Metadata Management, Data Lineage
Data Flow Diagramming (e.g., Visio, Lucidchart)
Data Cataloging (Alation preferred)
Data Quality & Stewardship Practices
SQL and Data Analysis
Strong documentation and communication skills
Nice-to-Have:
Experience in data lake / medallion architectures (Bronze/Silver/Gold) and enterprise platforms
Exposure to data privacy, vendor data exchanges, or regulated environments
Familiarity with tools such as Databricks, Kafka, ETL pipelines, or integration platforms
The pay range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is $31.44/hour - $49.12/hour. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis.
