Performs direct patient care duties under the direction of and as assigned by a Registered Nurse. Also performs administrative, clerical and clinical duties as assigned. Demonstrates age-specific competencies in the care of neonates, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school aged, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Complies with the policies and procedures of The Cape Fear Valley Health System. Upholds the standards of the system-wide customer service program.MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
Obtain, record and update vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and weight)
Monitor patient’s respiratory status and initiates oxygen therapy and treatments per protocol
Initiates cardiac monitoring; demonstrates ability to detect dysrhythmias and notifies registered nurse.
Administers approved medications as delegated by RN and/or provider
Perform oral, nasal and ET tube suctioning
Assist in C-spine stabilization/immobilization, placing patient on backboard while maintaining cervical alignment
Alway maintains patient safety and confidentiality
Assist with equipment setup including chest-tube drainage system, Rapid Infusion/Fluid Warming Systems, Bair Hugger and gastric lavage
Assist in application of restraints and/or seclusion as needed
Perform additional skills which may include, but not limited to phlebotomy, IV initiation and maintenance,12- lead ECG
Monitors assigned patients and reports unusual conditions to the RN and/or provider
Documents assessments, data collection/treatments performed on patient care record
Transports patients (to include cardiac monitored patients to Telemetry areas and patients with steady state intravenous medication infusions).
Acts as liaison between patient, family, nursing unit and medical staff personnel
Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Current Paramedic certification by the State of North Carolina required
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) as sponsored by American Heart Association required
WORK EXPERIENCE:
1 year experience as a paramedic required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
Ability to work calmly under extremely stressful conditions and follow established rules, procedures, and protocols
Ability to deal with patients, their families and others in a courteous, compassionate, professional manner under the most adverse circumstances, and an ability to maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and other emergency and health care personnel
Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis with the added strength to lift upwards of 100 pounds when the situation requires, includes moving a patient from a bed to the floor, chair to the floor, or from a stretcher to a bed
Knowledge of the age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual needs of the patients typically served
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs
Visual acuity for observation of patients
Ability to operate an emergency vehicle emergency and non-emergency traffic
Ability to move around numerous physical locations, some within confined areas
Ability to lift heavy objects, up to 150 pounds, with assistance and to assume awkward positions in emergency situations.
