What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accountant position at CapCenter?
CapCenter is a technology-driven mortgage lender headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. We originate purchase and refinance mortgages, sell loans into the secondary market, and operate with a small, high-leverage team — meaning every seat owns real outcomes, not slices of a bureaucracy. We are seeking a hands-on Senior Accountant who can run a clean close, keep the books in disciplined shape, and own the accounting craft.
Role Description
The Senior Accountant is the day-to-day owner of CapCenter's general ledger, monthly close, and reconciliations. The role is hands-on — preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, closing the books, and supporting the external audit. The right person is comfortable owning the close end-to-end, opinionated about controls and documentation, and measured by clean books, tight reconciliations, and a quiet audit.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger, Close, and Reconciliations
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close calendar — journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferred costs, intercompany, and standard recurring entries
- Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations for all material accounts, including cash, loans held for sale, derivative positions, MSR, accrued liabilities, and equity
- Maintain the chart of accounts, GL structure, and journal entry support so the books are auditable and decision-grade
- Produce US GAAP financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow) as the closing output — clean, tied-out, and ready for finance to use
- Drive close cycle time down through standardization, documentation, and process improvement without sacrificing accuracy
Audit and Statutory Support
- Own the workpaper binder for the external audit and any regulatory examinations — schedules, reconciliations, supporting documentation, and management responses
- Partner with the external auditor on PBC requests, sample selections, and accounting position memos
- Support statutory and regulatory reporting deliverables — warehouse lender financial reporting, agency reporting, and other compliance items that flow off the books
- Maintain technical accounting documentation and memos for material judgments and policies under the Accounting Manager's direction
Controls, Systems, and Processes
- Own day-to-day accounting controls — segregation of duties, journal entry review, reconciliation review, and exception handling
- Document accounting policies, procedures, and process narratives; keep them current as the business evolves
- Administer the accounting system (GL, AP, banking integrations) and partner with Technology on integrations, data flows, and automation opportunities
- Identify and implement process improvements that increase accuracy, reduce manual effort, and improve audit-readiness
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Public accounting experience in audit or financial services preferred
- 5 years of progressive experience, including ownership of a full close cycle and external audit
- Strong US GAAP accounting skills, including the ability to research, write, and defend positions
- Experience in mortgage banking, banking, or another regulated financial services environment
- Owner's mindset, high standards, and the ability to run a function with limited supervision
- Prior experience managing or mentoring at least one direct report
- Active CPA strongly preferred
