JOB PURPOSE
The job purpose of a Pharmacy Technician at the Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic is to support the pharmacy team in providing
accurate and timely medication services to patients receiving cancer and blood disorder treatments. This role involves assisting with
prescription processing, inventory managements, medication preparation, and ensuring adherence to pharmacy regulations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Assisting dispensing physician in processing and dispensing prescriptions for cancer and blood disorder treatments
2. Gathering and entering patient information, medication orders, and insurance details into the pharmacy system
3. Preparing and packaging medications, including chemotherapy drugs and specialized medications
4. Compounding sterile preparations for IV in accordance with established protocols and safety standards
5. Conducting inventory management tasks, such as ordering, receiving, and restocking medications and supplies
6. Maintaining accurate records of medication inventory, including tracking expiration dates and lot numbers
7. Collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate medication therapy for patients
8. Providing medication counseling to patients, explaining usage instructions, potential side effects, and precautions through
care plans
9. Assisting with medication reconciliation during transitions of care to ensure continuity and patient safety
10. Adhering to pharmacy regulations, standards, and safety protocols
11. Submitting prior authorizations
12. Answering phones
13. Participate in research operations as necessary, including signing and contributing to research activities as required by the
research department
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Completion of a pharmacy technician training program or certification from an accredited institution
3. Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) is preferred
4. Previous experience working as a pharmacy technician, preferably in an oncology or specialty pharmacy setting, is
advantageous
5. Valid pharmacy technician license or certification, as required by the state
6. Strong knowledge of pharmacy operations, medical terminology, and prescription processing
7. Knowledge of medication names, generic and brand, and their uses
8. Proficiency in using pharmacy software systems and technology
9. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in medication preparation and record-keeping
10. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and vendors
11. Knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and patient confidentiality requirements
12. Ability to work effectively in a team and prioritize tasks in a dynamic healthcare environment
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. The Pharmacy Technician will work in an outpatient clinic setting during regular business hours
2. Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks
3. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to handle medication vials, syringes, and other equipment
4. Ability to lift and move medication supplies and boxes, up to 40 pounds if required
DIRECT REPORTS
1. The Pharmacy Technician at the Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic does not have direct reports. However, they may
collaborate with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and efficient medication services for
patients
