The Essex North Supervisory Union Board seeks qualified candidates with visionary and systemic leadership capacity to serve as our next Superintendent of Schools.
The preferred candidate must demonstrate an understanding of current practices that advance holistic outcomes for student learning. Individuals must have experience in effectively leading and managing personnel, support systems, complex change and effectively engaging a school-community. Candidates are expected to show evidence of successful team building, strong communication skills, continuous personal learning and a learner-centered approach in collaborating to impact positive student outcomes.
ENSU is located on the border of Quebec and New Hampshire in the Northeast corner of Vermont, commonly referred to as the Northeast Kingdom. The Kingdom is known as the state’s most beautiful and undisturbed region. It offers breathtaking scenery, many recreational and cultural opportunities, numerous lakes, mountains and the Connecticut River. Canaan is approximately two hours from Montreal, three hours from Portland, and four hours from Boston.
The PK-12th Canaan School District serves a community of about 1200 people with a school of about 200 students. Although small, Canaan Schools offers many opportunities for students such as Running Start classes and an astounding CTE program. The ENSU also includes the NEK Choice District. The NEK Choice students may choose between numerous school options in our area, both public and approved independent schools. Currently there are 314 NEK Choice students attending 36 schools.

Qualifications:
1. Hold a Master’s degree and eligible for Vermont Superintendent Certification
2. Minimum of six years’ experience in public education with at least three years in Administration.
3. Successful experience with current educational practices related to curriculum, instruction and assessment including but not limited to: standards, proficiency-based learning, personalized learning, multiple pathways, and work/community based learning.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of public policy, federal & state requirements; and demonstrated experience with budgetary, supervisory responsibilities and collective bargaining.
5. Strong written, inter-personal, communication, technology, and collaboration skills coupled with experience with team building, organizational development, and community partnerships.
6. Experience in developing and implementing successful strategies for a supportive school environment and a multi-tiered system of support for diverse learners.
7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as deemed acceptable by the ENSU Board.
Mission/Position Goal: The Superintendent will provide the leadership to establish the necessary culture, capacity and practices in order to meet the educational needs of each learner in accordance with the mission and goals established by the ENSU Board and school community.
Salary based on experience. Excellent benefit package provided. The Board is willing to consider employment from .5 to 1.0 FTE (260 days) or as an interim position.
