Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Standardized Patients assists the Director of OSCE Education and Assessment in administering all aspects of the Standardized Patient (SP) Program and OSCE administration and assessment at Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM), playing a vitally important role in the training and development of CUSOM students and residents as well as other health professions students from Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (CPHS). This position will assist in managing all aspects of the recruitment, training and assessment of SPs and all case presentations involving SPs. Candidates for this position must possess both excellent verbal and written communication skills. Applicants should also have knowledge of identifying administrative and operational deficiencies along with performance improvement strategies. This position demands honesty, integrity, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor while working within the Christian mission of Campbell University.

Standardized Patients

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with CUSOM, CPHS, Graduate Medical Education (GME), and other Campbell University (CU) undergraduate, graduate, and professional program faculty and administration to provide guidance and feedback on the design and implementation of OSCE SP training activities.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate SP team members to ensure that SP performances meet case goals and objectives, and are consistent with nationally accepted standards and guidelines for best practices in standardized patient education.
  • Assist the Director in the design and administration of individual and collective SP performance improvement plans, initiatives, and professional development activities.
  • Provide operational leadership, including logistical and organizational support, for all SP educational programming (CUSOM, CPHS, GME and CU programs):
    • Identify appropriate Standardized Patients for individual educational activities based on specific skills, experience, demographic, and other requirements of the educational activity design and objectives.
    • Schedule team members for individual cases; reserve space for training sessions and other training as needed.
    • Complete and track payroll for all SP events and activities.
    • Create QR codes for Friday Clinical Case surveys.
    • Create QR codes for SP payroll tracking.
    • Create the monthly Call Back Friday Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) session schedule for 3rd and 4th year medical students.
    • Provide pre-brief orientations and instructions to student learners prior to all OSCE sessions.
    • Proctor student learners during OSCE sessions (CUSOM, CPHS and CU programs).
    • Communicate via telephone and email consistently and effectively with SPs, faculty, external clients, and members of the public who interface with the program.
    • Represent the SP Program in a positive way both on and off campus.
    • Foster transparency, interdisciplinary collaboration, and accountability in all areas.
    • Optimize resource allocation to support current and potential educational and programmatic objectives and initiatives for both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Stay current with new developments in the healthcare and medical education field.
    • Strive to represent the voice of the patient in the development of training, case materials and simulated encounters.
    • Maintain compliance and quality improvement goals consistent with national accreditation standards.
    • Always maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
    • Upholds and abides by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.

Administration And Assessment

  • Track pre- and post- assessment of activities and assignment completion.
  • Schedule and correspond with individual students regarding OSCE attendance, make up sessions, changes in schedules, challenges, and individual re-education sessions as necessary.
  • Email individual students with faculty feedback reports and OSCE challenge reports.
  • Monitor absences and report performances deductions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Collaborate with respective course directors to prepare course debrief documents.
  • Assemble student challenge submissions and report outcomes to students.
  • Develop efficient systems for routine tasks to ensure timely completion; identify and analyze backlogs or bottlenecks and propose improvements to streamline assessment-driven operations.
  • Direct students with grievances/concerns/questions to the appropriate party.
  • Manage logistics for Senior Partner Activities: collaborate with CUSOM’s Chair of Geriatrics and other faculty in management of Senior Partner activities.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Substantial work experience in a related field is also required: A minimum of three years of experience in an educational or corporate environment. Three years of management and/or training experience in a medical field preferred.
  • Theater experience is suggested, either as an actor or director, but not required. Significant experience as an SP actor is preferred.
  • Significant weight will be given to previous leadership and/or teaching experience at an accredited medical school.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • The ability to teach SPs how to perform, communicate, interpret checklist items, and give constructive feedback to students on their patient-physician interaction skills based on the design and objectives of the specific educational activity.
  • The ability to collaborate with faculty to develop and produce standardized patient case materials and checklists/rating scales for use by SPs and faculty in educational exercises. A basic knowledge of clinical skills and medical history-taking is helpful but not required.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership and management skills.
  • The ability to set priorities, manage several projects at once, and work with a large, diverse group of faculty and staff members, students, and standardized patients.
  • Must possess strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner, demonstrating tact, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with faculty, staff, students, university officials, and the public through both oral and written channels.
  • The ability to understand the application of data and analysis to the assessment of learners and program evaluation in order to foster program improvement initiatives and collaboration with experts in these areas.
  • The ability to work under stressful conditions with an even temperament, responding calmly and appropriately in emotional situations while establishing and maintaining harmonious working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • The ability to work autonomously, exercising independent judgment, as well as to function effectively as a team member.
  • General understanding of and comfort working with technology, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Simbridge, Qualtrics, Google Docs, Sim EMR, Wufoo, Survey Monkey, New Innovations and the internet.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and high ethical standards.

Complexity Of Duties

  • Involves extensive collaboration with faculty, staff, and students across multiple programs and disciplines.
  • Requires the ability to plan 3–6 months in advance while also responding to immediate administrative and operational challenges.
  • Requires adaptability, problem-solving, and independent judgment in complex, dynamic and novel situations.
  • Involves creativity and innovation in developing training, feedback, and assessment strategies as well approaches to improve operational efficiency and performance.
  • Complexity of duties will be commensurate with level of experience.
