Position Description:

As a Food Service Leader at South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you will provide leadership in the kitchen and dining hall, ensuring the provision of nutritious and delicious meals that contribute to the overall camp experience. Your role involves menu planning, food preparation, cooking, kitchen organization, inventory management, and supervision of Food Service Assistant. By embracing the mission of South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you will support the teaching of campers about Jesus Christ through your culinary skills and service.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent experience.

Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications:

  • Must be of Christian faith, be able to share your personal testimony of faith in Christ, and be actively involved or seeking involvement in local church fellowship.
  • Active Food Handlers card for Illinois.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety and Supervision:

  • Assume responsibility for the supervision and direction of Food Service Assistant, in accordance with camp policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to food handling and sanitation guidelines to maintain a safe cooking environment.
  • Prioritize the safety of staff and campers by adhering to established safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate and implement all program components relative to the daily schedule in a timely and organized manner, ensuring efficient meal service and kitchen operations.
  • Stay in the retreat center overnight Monday through Friday.

Weekly Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director to develop a diverse and balanced menu that accommodates dietary needs and preferences.
  • Prepare meals according to the planned menu, ensuring high-quality presentation, taste, and nutritional value for up to 65 people.
  • Accommodate special dietary needs or restrictions, ensuring alternative options are available and clearly labeled.
  • Assist at check-in by speaking with parents and campers to understand and confirm allergies and dietary requirements.
  • Maintain inventory of food supplies and kitchen equipment, monitoring stock levels and placing the weekly orders to prevent shortages.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, storage areas, and cooking utensils. Adhere to sanitation guidelines for a clean and safe working environment.
  • Keep daily temperature log for freezer and cooler environments.

General:

  • Maintain personal grooming and cleanliness standards, setting a positive example for campers and colleagues.
  • Assist with camp clean-up at the end of each session, promoting teamwork and responsibility.
  • Complete a summer feedback survey at the end of the summer.
  • Support other camp duties as needed and assigned, demonstrating a willingness to contribute to the success of the camp community.

  • Problem Solving: Address challenges in meal preparation and kitchen operations, finding creative solutions to ensure smooth and efficient service.

Physical and Other Requirements:

1. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.

2. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.

3. Ability to operate telephone.

4. Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.

5. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

6. Ability to access and produce information from a computer.

7. Ability to understand written information.
