Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role located in Otisfield, ME, as a Sailing Counselor at Camp Arcadia. The Sailing Counselor will be responsible for leading and instructing sailing activities for various age groups, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants. Day-to-day tasks include teaching sailing techniques, managing equipment, overseeing the safety protocols of waterfront activities, and fostering a love for water sports. This role also involves supporting campers’ personal growth, encouraging teamwork, and assisting with other program activities as needed.
We are a residential camp and counselors will have non-sailing duties as well. Such as lifeguarding during open swim, organizing and running games (e.g. soccer, capture the flag, tag style games, etc.)
Qualifications
- Proficiency in sailing, knowledge of water safety, and experience handling sailing equipment
- Ability to instruct, guide, and supervise participants in a positive and encouraging manner
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build trust and ensure collaboration
- Problem-solving and decision-making skills, especially in emergency or challenging situations
- Previous experience working with children or in a camp setting is highly valued
- Lifeguard certification or willingness to obtain one before camp starts
- Enthusiasm for outdoor activities and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment
- Experience working with children ages 7-17
- Teaches beginners through advanced Sailing lessons for campers aged 7-17, four activity periods a day (two in the morning and two in the afternoon). Occasionally, there may be opportunities to teach younger children or other adults
- Teaches according to Camp Arcadia’s activity levels, with a willingness to learn how these skills are taught and utilized within our community and program
- Collaborates directly with the Head of Sailing
- At least 18 years old.
