Minimum Pay: $15.13 per hour

FLSA: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

This position responds to fire and other emergency incidents to suppress fires, rescue victims, provide emergency medical care, and perform other duties as required.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Responds to fire calls and uses firefighting skills to evaluate and carry out actions to most efficiently control the emergency at hand; assists with the fighting of structural fires.

  • Operates a variety of pumps, ladders, hoses, and other equipment at the scene of fire, rescue, and other emergency incidents.

  • Provides emergency medical care at the first responder level.

  • Performs and records personal protective equipment inspections.

  • Completes required reports detailing fire and other incident responses.

  • Completes required training and maintains required certifications.

  • Inspects equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; washes and cleans equipment on a regular basis; repairs and performs routine maintenance on equipment; ensures the proper functioning of all equipment and vehicles.

  • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies aboard vehicles; conducts regular inspections.

  • Provides fire prevention information to the public; assists in teaching fire safety classes.

  • Performs housekeeping, grounds keeping, and building maintenance duties.

  • Conducts station and apparatus tours for school and other community groups.

  • Participates in public education events.

  • Conducts pre-incident planning on commercial and residential structures as requested.

  • Inspects and services fire hydrants.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Performs other work as required or when directed by administration.

  • In the event of an emergency, all Camden County employees are considered essential and may be required to perform alternate duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires.

  • Knowledge of firefighting standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and equipment.

  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures of the department.

  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance principles.

  • Knowledge of hydrant locations, water systems, and water mains.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes.

  • Knowledge of hazardous materials.

  • Skill in the operation of all firefighting, rescue, and other equipment, including motor vehicles.

  • Skill in extrication techniques.

  • Skill in the use of a computer and a records management system.

  • Skill in the use of radios and communication equipment.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The officer in charge of assigned station assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, OSHA regulations, and department and county policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related fire suppression and other emergency response duties. The variety of emergency situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work.

  • The purpose of this position is to protect lives and property through fire prevention and suppression and other activities. Successful performance helps ensure the safety of lives and property in the community.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, representatives of other emergency response agencies, local business owners, and the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and educate the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
