Summary Under the general direction of the Calumet County Director of Special Education, creates a successful educational program and safe, positive classroom environment resulting in high levels of learning and personal growth of each student that will contribute to their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development with the philosophy and goals of the district. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Implements all aspects of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process, including but not limited to, communication with team members, evaluation, reporting, IEP writing, IEP implementation, data collection and progress reporting. 

Reviews, revises, writes curriculum as per district format. 

Achieves district educational goals and objectives by promoting active learning and thinking in the classroom using board-adopted curriculum and other appropriate learning tools. 

Develops lesson objectives and/or unit plans, uses instructional materials, provides individualized and small-group instruction, and adapts the curriculum when necessary to meet the needs of each student.   

Systematically measures student performance by means of a variety of assessment tools such as teacher-made tests and standard or alternative assessments to measure learning. 

Implements current best practices to promote student learning. 

Differentiates lesson presentations, class activities, and assessments for students that will meet individual needs, interests and abilities of each student.

Monitors student academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction. 

Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning issues. 

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning. Arranges appropriate interventions, if needed.

Maintains current records of students’ educational progress in class record books, portfolios, electronic mediums, and/or Board-approved forms, and summarizes such progress for reporting purposes. 

Devises written and oral assignments and assessments that require analytical and critical thinking as well as factual knowledge. 

Communicates with parents through reports, conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss student progress. 

Maintains and improves professional competence through staff development activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.

Participates and contributes to the planning, evaluation and implementation of school and/or District programs via faculty meetings, councils, and District and school committees. 

Makes effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program. 

Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy. 

Supports the growth of initial and experienced educators through mentoring, collaborative planning, coaching, and other methods that foster team success.

Develops rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in a fair and just manner consistent with district policy. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day, as needed.  

Serves as a positive role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.   Additionally, helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

Supervisory Responsibilities                                                               

This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but contributes to the oversight and guidance to para-professional staff, in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures and applicable laws.

Education and/or Experience                                                   

Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or a related educational field; at least two years of related experience in special education; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Language Skills                                                               

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, administrators, school staff, and the general public.  Ability to communicate tactfully, clearly, concisely, and accurately with students, parents, and all school staff.

Mathematical Skills                                                      

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability                                                           

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills                                                              

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations 

Appropriate Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WI DPI) licensure for the position or the ability to acquire a license with provisions from WI DPI.

Other Skills and Abilities  

Knowledge of district-adopted curriculum and teaching strategies.

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in the application and interpretation of department policies and regulations.

Good knowledge of current special education topics and methodologies.

Experience working with students with a wide range of disabilities.

Ability to create IEPs and collaborate with support staff to create holistic intervention plans.

Ability to initiate and utilize relationships to effect change.

Demonstrates empathy toward students and strives for positive student relationships.

Demonstrates the ability to interpret, support and uphold the standards, ethics and boundaries of the education profession.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co-workers, other agencies, and the public.

Ability to lead and manage others effectively.  

Ability to apply laws of confidentiality appropriately.
