The California Lottery is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise headquartered in Sacramento. It is one of the few state agencies that is a revenue generator, not accepting taxpayer dollars from the state’s general fund. Our mission is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. Ninety-five cents of every dollar spent by players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retailer compensation.
In fiscal year 2023-24, the California Lottery provided over $2 billion in supplemental funding for California public schools, bringing the total contributions to more than $46 billion since we began in 1985. Lottery products are sold at more than 23,000 retail locations throughout the state. Product offerings include an average of 52 fun and entertaining Scratchers games and several draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and SuperLotto Plus and daily games such as Fantasy 5 and Hot Spot.
Job Description and Duties:
Under the general direction of the Chief of Financial Analysis and Risk Management, the Research Data Analyst I will perform a variety of research, analytical, and technical tasks to support the Finance Division’s initiatives in maximizing profits and managing risk. The Finance Division directly supports the California State Lottery’s mission to maximize contributions to education.
The Research Data Analyst I will function in a demanding and challenging business environment that requires the individual to perform independently or as a project team member while effectively maintaining a routine workload and regularly responding to multiple short-term tasks. The individual is expected to collaborate with staff in the Finance Division and throughout the California State Lottery as a whole.

This position is headquartered at the Sacramento Headquarters location and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule. Employees must be able to report to their assigned headquarters office as assigned. Travel expense to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee. Eligibility for telework requires the employee to reside in California per California Government Code Section 14200 which states: “telecommuting means the partial or total substitution of computers or telecommunication technologies, or both, for the commute to work by employees residing in California.

Working Conditions
Schedule: Remote-centered position with occasional operational need to report to HQ for in-person collaboration with staff or contractors or to manage physical files or reports.
Other: The RDAI may serve as back-up to the analysts in the event of an operational need for office coverage.
Desirable Qualifications
- Possessing a Bachelor's degree with a concentration in Finance, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, Mathematics, Accounting, or Economics.
- One year of experience conducting research, utilizing the scientific method, processes, complex statistics, algorithms, and software systems to gain retail-centric insights.
- Knowledge of R or Python and SQL
