The Division of Petroleum Market Oversight (DPMO) at the California Energy Commission is seeking an Investigative Counsel to support California’s efforts to strengthen oversight, transparency, and accountability within transportation fuels markets.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of law, energy policy, market oversight, and consumer protection while helping shape California’s clean energy future.
What You’ll Do
As Investigative Counsel, you will:
⚖️ Provide legal advice on competition-related matters impacting transportation fuels markets, including antitrust analyses and counseling.
📑 Lead and support complex investigations involving pricing practices, contracts, and market activities within the petroleum industry.
📝 Draft subpoenas and legal documents to compel testimony, attendance, and production of evidence.
🤝 Coordinate and collaborate with state and federal agencies working on related enforcement and oversight efforts.
🏛️ Advise leadership on confidential information laws, conflicts of interest, and transportation decarbonization policies.
🔍 Help implement Senate Bill X1-2 and support California’s efforts to improve petroleum market transparency and consumer protections.
📣 Provide critical legal guidance to support recommendations made to the Governor, Legislature, and Energy Commission leadership.
What We’re Looking For
✔️ Experience handling complex investigations, litigation, regulatory, or enforcement matters.
✔️ Knowledge of antitrust law, regulatory law, or competition-related legal issues.
✔️ Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
✔️ Ability to interpret and apply complex statutes and regulations.
✔️ Experience collaborating with government agencies and stakeholders.
