Job Description And Duties
All applicants will be considered, however SROA/Surplus candidates will be given priority.
Positions are located in the Cerritos Office.
Under the general direction of the Business Taxes Administrator I (BTA I), the Business Taxes Specialist (BTS) I independently performs the most complex, difficult, and sensitive tax compliance and collection work. Additionally, the BTS I acts in a leadership capacity performing monthly reviews of aged revocation and collection cases, providing guidance to staff and evaluating needs for training. The BTS I performs review of assignments through the Centralized Revenue Opportunity System (CROS) Assignment Control. The BTS I may be able to assign tasks and approve assignments. The BTS I (either individually or as a lead person of a team) develops, revises, or maintains training course materials. The BTS I prepares replies to issues of tax law and compliance function policies and procedures and serves on special project committees. This position exercises a high degree of independence and responsibility in these activities. Travel may be required up to ten percent (10%) of the time, which may include overnight.
Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.
Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California’s Personal Leave Program.

In Addition To Meeting The Minimum Qualifications For The BUSINESS TAXES SPECIALIST I, Competition Is Limited To Individuals Who Meet At Least One Of The Following Promotional Examination Criteria:
- Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or
- Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or
- Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or
- Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application.
