Job Description And Duties
These positions are for the Department of State Hospitals - Coalinga.
Rehabilitation Therapist, State Facilities (Music-Safety) (Department of State Hospitals, Coalinga; Coalinga, CA) (Multiple Positions): Use music media and activities to provide a non-threatening, self-motivating experience to assist patients in relating to the immediate environment, the self, and the community. Provide an atmosphere compatible with behavioral change, self-expression, and nonverbal and verbal communications. Responsible for the direct provision of treatment services to the patient on the home unit and/or in the Treatment Mall. Provide rehabilitation services to patients within the overall scope of services, techniques, and programs authorized by the Rehabilitation Therapy Service at the Department of State Hospitals, Coalinga. Organize, plan, and provide recovery-oriented courses/groups/activities with the focus dictated by patient's objectives. Provide orientation for all patients regarding rehabilitation groups and leisure activities. Inform patients of other special events and activities available to them in the hospital. Meet with, and provide rehabilitation therapy services for, patients who have identified needs. Organize, promote, implement, or coordinate events, including holiday recognition or special events, that may enhance the patient's quality of life while hospitalized. Coordinate unit party fund expenditures. Meet regularly with unit activity coordinator to help plan unit parties and leisure activities. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment through accountability and supervision of controlled items used in Rehabilitation Therapy activities, responding to therapeutic strategies interventions (TSI), security breaches, and intervention or management of a patient’s behavior. Assess each assigned patient’s interest in rehabilitation therapy interventions and provide written documentation of assessment in the patient's medical record. Create treatment objectives based on information gathered during assessment. Gather information on patient progress on their objectives through attendance in shift changes, interdisciplinary teams, group observation, patient interview, and chart review. Participate in the Treatment Plan Conference (TxPC) of each assigned patient providing documentation of the patient's progress in the TxP prior to the TxPC. Participate in professional development activities by completing all hospital core training as scheduled, attending colloquia, special workshops, seminars, conferences, service off-sites, continuing education, individual study, or other avenues of professional development. Attend and participate in monthly Rehabilitation Therapy Department service meetings. Complete and file the appropriate note identifying the patient's progress weekly, monthly, and/or quarterly.
Minimum requirements: Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Music Therapy, Music Education, or related field.
Salary: $8,010 – $9,433 per month ($96,120 - $113,196 per year)

DSH-Coalinga opened in 2005 and began treating forensically committed patients, mostly of which are sexually violent predators. It is a self-contained psychiatric hospital constructed with a security perimeter. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) provides perimeter security as well as transportation of patients to outside medical services and court proceedings.
All state civil service employees are currently subject to a mandatory Personal Leave Program (PLP). The PLP program reduces the monthly gross salary but provides paid leave options (PLO) leave credits in lieu of pay. The amount of salary reduction depends on the classification and associated union Bargaining Unit (BU). The BU that represents this position is BU19 and is represented by America Federation of State, County, and Municipal Engineers (AFSCME) . The expected salary reduction will be 3% of the salary identified above, and you will accrue 5 hours of PLP each qualifying pay period. Incumbents will be subject to the PLP salary reduction and leave accruals through June 30, 2027. Positions with time bases that are less than full-time will receive a prorated accrual of PLP that’s based on number of hours worked during the pay period.
