Job Description And Duties

Under the direction of a Criminalist Supervisor, the Crime Analyst (CA) II plans, coordinates, and conducts statewide DNA sample collection training for law enforcement personnel under California Penal Code Section 296 and related codes for inclusion of the resultant DNA profiles in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS); performs complex identification duties to determine offender and offense eligibility for DNA sample submission and database entry; evaluates eligibility for expungement of DNA samples and profiles; participates in special projects independently or as part of a team for purposes of increasing the accuracy of DNA sample submissions and improving overall DNA sample collection practices statewide, and manages the State’s supply of DNA sample collection kits.

Department Information

  • This position is located in the Division of Law Enforcement, Bureau of Forensic Services, Jan Bashinski DNA Laboratory in Richmond.
  • Please disregard the SROA/Su rplus language below, as the Department of Justice requires applicants to submit their SROA/Surplus Letter if that is the basis of their eligibility.
  • Please note that all new to state employees will be given the minimum salary of the classification. For current state employees and/or those with reinstatement rights, your salary will be determined in accordance with the applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary wage reductions in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) accruals. The specific rate and hours earned were negotiated and agreed upon by each bargaining unit. The actual monetary impact of these temporary reductions can vary based on your bargaining unit and/or federal and state tax withholdings.   • Note: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the approval of the Criminalist Supervisor and program need, upon completion of training for a maximum number of two weekly telework days. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
