EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT (EMPHASIS ON 6-12 DISCIPLINARY LITERACY)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The primary role of an educational consultant is to positively impact student achievement by providing coaching, training, and support to assigned schools in the implementation of quality curriculum, instruction, and assessment. These efforts are intended to support schools as they provide quality Tier One classroom instruction and Tier Two intervention strategies to students. The Disciplinary Literacy Consultant will provide regional leadership in all areas of 6th-12th grade disciplinary literacy, including consultation, professional learning, and implementation planning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

• Work cooperatively with the Assistant Superintendent of Regional Instructional Services and consultants/coaches to plan training for teachers, teaching assistants, paraprofessionals and administrators.
• Analyze, interpret and effectively assess strengths and opportunities for growth.
• Establish positive and productive professional relationships with all constituents.
• Effectively communicate in one to one situations and in group settings.
• Design and facilitate collaborative, job-embedded professional learning opportunities aligned with Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model.
• Assist in the collection of data, its analysis and its use to inform instructional decisions both in the classroom and at the school level in order to improve student achievement.
• Model high quality disciplinary instructional approaches for 6-12 teachers.
• Support secondary instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and administrators in effective disciplinary literacy implementation.
• Serve as a regional source for development and delivery of professional development related to research-based disciplinary literacy strategies for teachers of Grades 6-12.
• Remain knowledgeable about current research and pedagogical recommendations relevant to disciplinary literacy.
• Assist local districts in identifying strengths and needs in support of disciplinary literacy implementation.
• Ability to leverage the expertise of content-area experts and resources.
• Employ data conferencing with individual teachers/administrators and teams of teachers.
• Support classroom teachers to align instruction with curriculum and the State Standards and related GELN Disciplinary Literacy Essentials and the Essential Schoolwide Practices for Disciplinary Literacy.
• Understand implementation and improvement sciences.
• Expand teachers’ use of a variety of resources to improve instruction.
• Assist in the development and implementation of formative and summative assessments.
• Provide leadership and assist in the coordination of a variety of programs/services such as family learning nights, parent/teacher conferences, summer programs, community trainings, instructional coaching and data conferencing.
• Manage grant requirements, budget, reporting, and evaluation related to the position.
• Model continuous learning and use best practice in educational improvement.
• Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor's degree and five or more years teaching experience in Grades 6-12 required.
• Master’s Degree in related fields required.
• Cognitive Coaching Training and/or Coaching 101 preferred.
• Coaching experience preferred.
• Ability to use observational data and formative assessment process to guide professional learning and coaching.
• Experience with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion within education
• Broad knowledge of major standards in the four core content areas and their implications for disciplinary literacy instruction
• Demonstrated success with teaching students at-risk in the area of mathematics.
• Familiarity and success with utilizing formative, screening, and diagnostic tools with students to determine appropriate mathematics instruction.
• Ability to utilize data from diagnostic tools to determine additional extra supports needed.
• Experience facilitating adult learners and ability to build relationships.
• Be a self-starter.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid teaching certificate.

B. Complaint/Grievance Procedure Notice

I. Any person believing that the Calhoun Intermediate School District or any of the District’s staff has inadequately applied the principles and/or regulations of non-discrimination laws or district non-discrimination policies may bring forward a complaint, which shall be referred to as a grievance to the district’s Civil Rights Coordinator.

II. The person who believes s/he has a valid basis for grievance shall discuss the grievance informally and on a verbal basis with the District’s Civil Rights Coordinator, who shall in turn investigate the complaint and reply with verbal answer to the complainant. S/He may initiate formal procedures according to the following steps:

Step 1
A written statement of the grievance signed by the complainant shall be submitted to the District’s Civil Rights Coordinator within five (5) business days of receipt of answers to the informal complaint. The Coordinator shall further investigate the matters of grievance and reply in writing to the complainant within five (5) business days.

Step 2
If the complainant wishes to appeal the decision of the District’s Civil Rights Coordinator, s/he may submit a signed statement of appeal to the Superintendent of Schools within five (5) business days after receipt of the Coordinator’s response. The Superintendent shall meet with all parties involved, formulate a conclusion and respond in writing to the complainant within ten (10) business days.

Step 3
If the complainant remains unsatisfied, s/he may appeal through a signed written statement to the Board of Education within five (5) business days of his/her receipt of the Superintendent’s response in step two. In an attempt to resolve the grievance, the Board of Education shall meet with the concerned parties and their representative within twenty (20) business days of the receipt of such an appeal. A copy of the Board’s disposition of the appeal shall be sent to each concerned party within ten (10) business days of this meeting.

The District’s Coordinator, on request, will provide a copy of the District’s grievance procedure and investigate all complaints in accordance with this procedure.
