Job Title: Assistant Director of Child Nutrition
Reports to: Director of Child Nutrition
Position Status: Full time school year - 190 work days
Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Child Nutrition assists the Director in overseeing all aspects of
CCSU’s Child Nutrition Program (CNP). The Assistant Director’s most essential job function is
to function as the Floater Head Cook for all of the seven schools in the CCSU when there are
coverage needs due to callouts and staff shortages. The Assistant Director also assists in
administrating, planning, implementing, and evaluating the Food Service program in order to
meet the nutritional and educational needs of children, as they relate to the CNP. The school
nutrition professional shall assist with the development of a sound and functional food program
while following federal, state, and local guidelines. The CNP is to provide an environment that
supports healthy food habits while maintaining program integrity and customer satisfaction.
Job Duties
The essential duties of the Assistant Child Nutrition Director include:
● Substitute as a Head Cook within the schools as needed.
● Work with the Director to coordinate and supervise daily operations, ensuring efficient
and effective food production and distribution
.
● Use periodic visits and kitchen participation to form strong relationships with cooks in
order to provide effective training, resolve inter-staff issues and develop a “can-do”
culture within the CNP
● Transport food and supplyes to and between schools. *Must have a reliable vehicle be
able to drive own vehicle to and between other sites.
● Directly oversee programs such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and
DOD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program to ensure full use of funds and eliminate
overlap or conflict with grant funding, such as Vermont’s Local Foods Incentive Grant.
● Coordinate and assist in conducting meetings and in-services for the purpose of
disseminating information related to food safety, program efficiency and established
procurement procedure.
● Provide training and assistance to Food Service staff in the proper use of the Point of Sale
System, and other required daily Child Nutrition paperwork and record keeping. Assist in
maintaining record keeping and accountability to ensure all records and supporting
documentation are maintained in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and
policies.
● Perform with a commitment to promote a quality CNP that meets the nutritional needs of
the customers served
● Perform with an overall nature that is committed to the goals and visions of the CNP and
the CCSU as a whole.
Qualifications/Experience
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential
duty satisfactorily, in addition to the following:
Education and Experience. High School Diploma AND At least Five (5) years of Food
Service, Culinary or relevant experience Required. Bachelor's or Associates Degree (or
equivalent) with concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics,
nutrition education, culinary arts, business or a related field Preferred. A working
knowledge of cooking procedures, following/scaling recipes, and kitchen health and
safety is Required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations. ServSafe Certification is required. May be acquired
within 90 days of hire date. Local food safety certification is required. Must be
knowledgeable of all local health and food safety ordinances.
Language Skills. Ability to effectively present information to and respond to questions
from administrators, parents, peers, board members, and the general public.
● Mathematical/Reasoning Skills. Ability to follow and scale a recipe. Ability to do simple
math in order to operate the POS system and make change. Must be able to use "critical
thinking" skills in order to resolve problems. Must possess excellent time management
and organizational skills.
● Computer Skills and Experience. Good basic computer skills and experience with word
processing programs required. Experience with Microsoft and Google preferred.
Experience operating a Point of Sale (POS) system. Must be able to communicate
electronically through use of email and other similar computer platforms. Must be able to
learn new programs easily and quickly.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills. Ability to efficiently, effectively, and regularly
communicate and work cooperatively with a variety of individuals, including students,
peers, parents, supervisors, coworkers, and representatives of outside organizations and
businesses. Ability to effectively handle stressful situations and resolve conflicts.
Physical Requirements
The work environment is in a mixed environment, with a combination of time spent in an office
setting and in a commercial kitchen setting with moderate noise, a variation of temperatures, and
frequent exposure to cleaning chemicals. The work is moderate/heavy work, requiring exertion
of up to 40 pounds of force to move or lift objects on a regular basis. The following physical and
