Position Overview
The Middle School Band Director is responsible for the overall management and instruction of the instrumental music program for grades 6–8. This role focuses on building a strong musical foundation for beginning students while advancing the technical and expressive skills of intermediate players. Additionally, this position serves as the Assistant Marching Band Director for the high school program, requiring close collaboration with the High School Director to ensure a seamless 6–12 instrumental curriculum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Instructional Leadership
- Comprehensive Pedagogy: Provide expert instruction on foundational skills for all instrument families, including brass, percussion, and woodwinds.
- Beginning Band: Lead the recruitment and initial instruction of 6th-grade students, focusing on instrument selection, posture, embouchure, and literacy.
- Performance Standards: Prepare ensembles for high-quality performances, including school concerts and community events.
- KMEA Participation: Organize and prepare students for KMEA District Concert Festival and Solo and Ensemble Festival, ensuring students meet the technical requirements for "Distinguished" ratings.
2. Program Management
- Classroom Management: Establish and maintain a positive, disciplined, and productive rehearsal environment conducive to middle school learners.
- Materials and Supplies: Manage the music library, instrument inventory, and equipment storage. Oversee the maintenance and repair of school-owned instruments.
- Budgeting: Assist in the requisition of new music, equipment, and instructional supplies while adhering to district financial policies.
3. Collaborative & High School Duties
- Assistant Marching Band Director: Assist with the high school marching band during summer camp, after-school rehearsals, and weekend competitions.
- 6-12 Alignment: Work closely with the High School Band Director to align curriculum, technical exercises, and recruitment efforts to ensure a healthy transition from middle to high school.
- Communication: Maintain regular contact with parents, administrators, and the Band Booster organization regarding schedules, fees, and student progress.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from an accredited institution.
- Certification: Valid Kentucky Teaching Certificate for Integrated Music or Instrumental Music (P–12).
- Skills: Proficiency in conducting, score study, and secondary instrument pedagogy.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lead outdoor rehearsals for marching band, including standing for extended periods and enduring various weather conditions.
