What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Service Engineer position at Caladan Bio?
Field Service Engineer
Full-time | On-site (Brooklyn, NY) | $100,000-$120,000 DOE
The Role
We’re looking for a Field Service Engineer to join our team, working out of our Brooklyn, NY office.
As our first hire in this function, you’ll play a key role in deploying Caladan 250 systems, training customers, and making sure our users have a great experience from day one. You’ll spend your first few months in our Brooklyn lab learning the product inside and out — running systems, understanding every module, and building confidence with the workflows our customers rely on. Over time, you’ll support installations worldwide, perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot hardware and process issues, and help establish best practices for how Caladan systems are used in real bioprocess environments.
Expect a dynamic, startup-style environment where priorities shift quickly and the work spans hands-on technical service, customer training, and shaping how our field service function grows.
What You’ll Do
- Install and commission Caladan 250 systems at customer sites, including operator training and onboarding.
- Support customers during early fermentation or cell culture runs by advising on process setup, experimental design, and parameter selection.
- Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repairs across a range of system modules (peristaltic pumps, off-gas sensors, peltier systems, etc.).
- Conduct in-house service activities in our Brooklyn office: system testing, PMs, refurb, and root-cause analysis.
- Manage spare parts inventory and ensure accurate tracking in our systems.
- Document all work in our CRM and service tools — installation notes, PM records, ticket updates, and quality-related activities.
- Manage customer support tickets, providing timely troubleshooting and clear communication with users.
- Share performance insights with engineering and product teams.
- Participate in generating cross-selling leads by identifying customer needs and routing them back to sales.
- Travel to customer sites as needed (up to ~80% during peak periods).
What You’ll Bring
- BS in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar with 3 years of hands-on experience running bioreactors for microbial fermentation and/or cell culture.
- Strong mechanical aptitude — comfortable working with tools, swapping bioreactor sub-systems, and diagnosing equipment issues in the field.
- Experience troubleshooting hardware, instrumentation, pumps, or automation systems.
- Familiarity diagnosing and troubleshooting linux based systems using standard access and logging tools. Comfortable accessing systems remotely via SSH and providing the software team with relevant debug logs and system output.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- A positive, can-do attitude and professional presence with customers.
- Valid driver’s license and passport (or ability to obtain one).
- Ability to travel on short notice when needed.
Nice to Have
- Experience with both cell culture and microbial fermentation.
- Exposure to different bioreactor platforms.
Why Join Us
- Help build the foundation of Caladan’s global field service team.
- Work directly with cutting-edge bioreactor technology used by leading industrial biology teams.
- Shape how we deploy, support, and scale our systems as we grow.
- Competitive salary ($100k–$120k) plus benefits (medical, vision, dental).
